West Heidelberg and Northcote Programs

St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria has been supporting young people to improve educational outcomes for over 10 years. In 2021 Vinnies run seven Education Programs across Victoria. The West Heidelberg and Northcote programs operates as reading clubs. Both these reading clubs support primary school aged young people from CALD families to develop social, emotional and academic confidence and competence. The West Heidelberg and Northcote Education Programs provide important guidance and educational support to participants, while fostering a strong sense of community through developing a love of reading.

The Role

The Education Program Coordinator is responsible for the planning, operation, management delivery and reporting of the West Heidelberg and Northcote Education Programs. They will run weekly programs during Victorian school terms, conduct telephone interviews, induct and support new volunteers; enrol students; develop resources, keep and report weekly statistics; and support the sustainability and growth of the program. They will report to the Education Program Team Leader and participate in weekly team meetings and scheduled professional development sessions on school holidays.

As a member of a growing Education Program Team of six, you will be responsible for ensuring that both programs operate with excellence on the scheduled days during the four Victorian school terms. You will love books and reading and know the value of developing sound literacy skills. You will enjoy working within a framework of continuous quality improvement and reflective practice. You will have a growth mindset, believe in a strength based approach and always be open to new and innovative practices based on sound educational principles. You will be able to provide evidence of your experience working with young people in an educational context. You will be organised, proficient in excel and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously. You will bring a proactive, supportive approach to the team and be a program leader who thrives on creating an engaging learning experience for participants and volunteers alike.

Those studying primary teaching or the humanities; retired primary school professionals or primary trained teachers returning to the education sector after extended leave are encouraged to apply.

More specifically you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline education (preferred), youth work, social work or community engagement (or significant & current study towards such a qualification).
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal and stakeholder relationship skills.
  • Experience working with primary school age children within an education context.
  • Ability to work independently and lead a team of volunteers.
  • Experience in public speaking and facilitating training for adults.
  • Strong project management, record keeping, excel spreadsheets and training/teaching skills.
  • Ability to work independently, with strong organisational and time management skills, including setting priorities and working within deadlines.
  • Positive and kind disposition and a desire to work collaboratively with a growing team.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Managing the program by leading and engaging your team of volunteers to provide an exceptional education service.
  • Implementing and adhering to student management strategies, child safety standards, operational procedures and a theory of growth mindset that encourage student engagement within a safe and protective environment.
  • Identify the needs of the program or community and develop, implement and review responses and systems that promote best practice service delivery.
  • Developing term program plans to support the educational framing of all programs.
  • Training, supporting and interviewing adult and student volunteers to work with you in the education programs.
  • Maintaining accurate records and weekly statistics with a high level of confidentiality.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders associated with both program sites.
