The St Vincent de Paul Society is a leading provider of community support services, whose mission  it is to shape a more just and compassionate society.

The Role:

The Case Worker will provide casework support to people accessing Vinnies homelessness and housing services who are experiencing homelessness and/or persons in danger of becoming homeless.

Your responsibilities:

  • Engaging with persons sleeping rough and/or those in danger of becoming homeless
  • Conducting initial intakes and assessments and providing crisis intervention where appropriate
  • Working closely with the client to develop case plans that include ongoing support, review, and follow up; crisis intervention as required
  • Referring clients to appropriate external services such as those that provide life skill and educational programs
  • Providing crisis intervention where appropriate
  • Supporting and assisting clients in a way that promotes independence, empowerment and prevents a return to homelessness
  • Undertaking home visits, advocating on behalf of the clients where required, and supervising client activities
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date client records and case notes.

This role will report to the Manager Homelessness and Housing.

To be successful, you will need:

  • The St Vincent de Paul Society considers being a woman is a genuine occupational qualification for this position under section 31 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  • Minimum TAFE Certificate IV or currently undertaking tertiary study, in welfare or related field
  • Previous experience providing support to marginalised and vulnerable people support to homeless persons
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of issues relating to homelessness but not limited to family breakdown, mental illness, drug, alcohol and gambling addictions
  • Demonstrated awareness of appropriate local community support services for homeless clients, including government agencies and NGO's, and the capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with service providers
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills & sound computer skills
  • Ability to use sound judgement and act appropriately in crisis and emergency situations
  • NSW driver licence - flexibility to travel to meet clients needs.
