ABOUT SUFY

Speaking Up for You Inc (SUFY) is an independent Individual Social Advocacy Organisation for people with disability who live in Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Redlands regions. SUFY protects and defends the human rights of vulnerable people with disability through individual advocacy to address injustices and make a positive and sustainable difference to their lives.

Its key principles are:

  • Human rights: SUFY will promote, protect and defend the lives and the human rights of each person with disability whom we support in an advocacy relationship.
  • Social Justice: SUFY will operate in ways that support the achievement of rights, equity, access, participation and equality in our advocacy work with each person.
  • Inclusion in Community Life: SUFY will operate in ways that value and support the inclusion of people with disability in the life of their diverse communities.

SUFY is a small special-purpose organisation based in West End QLD 4101. Although its income and staff numbers fluctuate over time, it generally has a financial turnover of between $500k and $1m and a staff team of 10-15.

The Role

SUFY is seeking a part-time Disability Advocate to work with and on behalf of vulnerable people with disability in the Brisbane area. This challenging position requires an understanding of social advocacy, with demonstration of a strong sense of human rights and social justice, and a commitment to people with disability being included and living decent lives free from abuse, neglect and isolation.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

SUFY employees are employed under the conditions of an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement. The Disability Advocate role is under a fixed-term contract until 30 June 2023 (~12 months), with the possibility of extension. Pay and conditions are equivalent to Level 5 of the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services (SCHADS) Industry Award. Work from home options may be considered if appropriate and compatible with organisational requirements.

As an employee of SUFY you will be required to visit disability accommodation, aged care facilities and hospitals. Following the Disability Accommodation Services Direction (No. 25), it is an expectation of employment that SUFY staff will follow this directive and provide evidence (such as a vaccination certificate or medical exemption) that will permit you access to these facilities.
