Services provided include disability justice and discrimination advocacy, tenant advocacy, welfare rights and legal advice.

About the Role

Sussex Street Community Law Service provides Individual Disability Advocacy Services (IDAS) across the Midwest and Goldfields/ Esperance regions. There is currently one (1) vacancy for a Disability Royal Commission Advocate based in Geraldton and one (1) vacancy for a Disability Royal Commission Advocate based in Kalgoorlie.

The position seeks to support people with a disability, their families, carers and the wider community who have concerns or experienced violence, abuse, neglect and/or exploitation of people with a disability share their story through the Disability Royal Commission.

The right person for this role will have the following profile:

  • Experience in non-legal advocacy for people with disability.
  • Existing relationships or a desire to build relationships with referral partners within your region.
  • Enjoys working remotely from the organisation’s head office whilst contributing to a larger team and strategic vision (you will be working from the Geraldton or Kalgoorlie office). 

In this role you will have the opportunity to apply your skills and talents in the following ways:

COMMUNITY INFORMATION AND ADVOCACY

  • Support clients to participate in the Disability Royal Commission.
  • Provide face to face assistance to clients or by alternative methods as appropriate.
  • Provide clients with referrals to other relevant agencies and services. 

COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS

  • Develop and maintain external networks with particular reference to people with disability, Aboriginal and CALD communities.
  • Participate in community education activities as required.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Maintain client records and statistical data.
  • Provide accountability documentation, including reports, as required.
  • Prepare reports as required for management and funding bodies.

OTHER DUTIES AS REQUIRED

  • Participation in organisational activities.
  • Participate in program development as required.
  • Participate in DRC meetings.
  • Engage in SSCLS professional supervision.

ESSENTIAL TO THE ROLE

Credentials

  1. Qualifications in social sciences, human services and /or relevant experience.
  2. Experience in working with people with disabilities navigating the DRC Process.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice.
  4. Be eligible to obtain a clear national police record check.

Experience

  1. Previous experience in the provision of services for people with disabilities.
  2. Previous experience in the provision of advocacy services.
  3. Previous experience in supporting people in relation to DRC.
  4. Demonstrated networking experience.

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  2. Highly developed organisational and administrative skills.
  3. Competent in the use of personal computers and ability to process required documentation.
  4. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

DESIRABLE TO THE ROLE

  1. Previous experience in working with Aboriginal and CALD clients and agencies.
  2. Previous experience in the provision of individual advocacy services for people with disabilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

One of these positions will be based in Geraldton and the other will be based in Kalgoorlie. Both positions are directly supported by the DRC Team Leader.

A Driver's License is desirable as travel in and around regional WA is likely.

Whilst the hours have been designed to meet the needs of clients and applicants who are working parents, we also encourage applications from candidates who are interested in working flexibly between the hours of 7.00am and 7.00pm on weekdays. Attending events outside of working hours will be managed in accordance with the organisation’s time-off-in-lieu policy.
