Head of Operations - Home Ground Social Enterprise Cafe

Tanti Park Social Enterprises

Home Ground is a not-for-profit cafe on the Mornington Peninsula with a mission to invest in and train the next generation of hospitality superstars, and create a community hub for the people of the Tanti Estate. We are looking for an experienced and passionate hospitality professional to lead our team as our head of operations.

Our mission

The Mornington Peninsula is known for its pristine beaches, world class wineries and vibrant cafe scene but did you know that it also has one of the highest rates of youth unemployment in Australia. It also has, at any given moment, 200 unfilled jobs in hospitality.

Some of our country's most affluent communities sit alongside some of our most underprivileged. The opportunity to find meaningful employment is out of reach for many of our communities most at risk young people. Whether it is a lack of public transport, inadequate training or simply low self-belief, the challenge of finding a good job is a real and present issue facing many of our youth. Home Ground aims to bridge the gap between our unemployed youth and the opportunity of a career in our region's hospitality industry. We have been helping young people like develop new skills, build confidence and enter the hospitality workforce through our 10 week traineeship for the past 4 years.

The role

As head of operations, you would be responsible for all operations within the organisation including general cafe trade, front and back of house, catering, ‘In This Together’ initiative, and all external partnerships. You would oversee the recruitment, training and management of all paid staff and unpaid volunteers, and are responsible for the development and implementation of all operational tasks, policies and procedures.

You would also be responsible for ensuring the cafe is a suitable training space for the traineeship, and would assist with the training and education of the trainees. Your focus would be to turn Home Ground into a venue that is in line with the best cafes in the industry, and that is well placed to provide our trainees with 'real' vocational experience so that they can embark on successful hospitality careers beyond the traineeship.

Success will be benchmarked against KPI’s and targets set by the board of directors with a specific focus on revenue, wage and cost of goods targets, adherence to Home Ground’s values, and aligning operations with Home Ground’s mission.

Who we are looking for

You will be a seasoned hospitality professional with years of experience in similar management positions. Your heart will be for the community, your customers, your staff, and the trainees, and you will have a passion for investing back into the industry. You're just as comfortable behind the coffee machine or poaching an egg, as you are working through a P&L and rostering your team. You are a strong leader and expert motivator, with the ability to clearly communicate expectations and hold your team accountable to them, especially when they are not met.
