Tasmanian Land Conservancy

ABOUT THE TLC

The TLC is a for-purpose (not-for-profit), apolitical, science and community-based organisation that protects nature on private land in Tasmania. Through science, community and enduring commitment, we inspire and empower people to conserve nature in Tasmania; we do this for the benefit of current and future human generations and for nature itself.

We conserve important habitats and ecosystems by raising funds to buy and manage private land and by working with landholders to protect nature on their land.

Tasmania has a wonderful natural heritage with over 50% of the state already protected by magnificent reserves. We are superbly placed to develop one of the world’s leading protected area systems – a reserve system that provides sufficient habitat for the long-term survival of our biodiversity.

The TLC strategy is to build a system of secure core areas managed for conservation. Our aim is to conserve and manage an additional 30,000 hectares of land for nature conservation by 2025 through reserves and through management for conservation.

Some land becomes TLC reserves, protected by conservation covenants. Other land goes into our ‘revolving fund’: it is permanently legally protected with a conservation covenant and resold to conservation-minded buyers. The TLC also works with landowners to protect the ecological values of their properties through conservation programs including the Midlands Conservation Fund, Land for Wildlife and WildTracker. In 21 years of operation, the organisation has protected more than 91,000 hectares through our activity.

The Position

The Conservation Programs Ecologist (South) works with other team members to meet deliverables according to contractual obligations and operational arrangements and assists the TLC in other functions. This will include developing and negotiating conservation agreements with private landowners and assisting them with best practice management recommendations.

This role requires a high degree of field-based ecological knowledge, negotiation skills and the ability to demonstrate tact, strategic planning and independent decision making. A can-do professional attitude, good problem-solving skills, team approach and the ability to work independently achieving high level outcomes in a short timeframe is required.

We are looking for a tertiary qualified candidate with experience in the conservation field including practical field-based assessments, survey and ecological monitoring knowledge. We want someone with knowledge of conservation covenants and other private land conservation agreements and the ability to deliver complex technical advice on land management issues to landholders.

The position on offer is fixed term (1 year), part time (60% FTE = 45.6 hours / fortnight) and based in Hobart, Tasmania. The TLC provides a flexible work environment where a good work-life balance can be maintained.

A remuneration package is offered based on TLC Professional Level 2.3 - 2.6 ($76,000 - $85,000 p.a. pro rata plus statutory superannuation) commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience.
