The Women's Drug and Alcohol Service

The Women's Drug and Alcohol Service is a state wide service providing specialist clinical services and professional support in the care of pregnant women and their babies impacted by complex substance use and alcohol dependence. Our philosophy values a social model of health, gender sensitivity and acknowledges the diversity in womens lives. The service provides state wide multidisciplinary professional support, education and training, secondary consultation, professional and student placement and consumer and professional resources. In addition the service has a leadership role in improving outcomes for pregnant women affected by drugs and alcohol. This includes an advocacy role in policy and program development and research.

Your contribution:

Your duties will include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Manage and develop the services of WADS in consultation with the Director, Social Model of Health, and Medical Head of Unit
  • Liaise with key internal and external stakeholders to the Women’s
  • Maintaining a clear partnership with maternity services and the teams sitting within the Social Model of Health to ensure wrap around maternity and psychosocial care.
  • Identify and develop long and short term strategic and operational goals for the service.
  • Provide leadership, support and direction to the developments and improvements of the service.
  • Ensure that all staff are supported to work professionally, safely and effectively, in accordance with the Women’s evidence-based guidelines, and relevant professional standards.
  • Provide a visible leadership presence across the service.
  • Maintain a clear partnership with Maternity services to ensure appropriate linkages and supports for the midwifery team member.
  • Ensure that the service operates within allocated program grant and budget, maximising efficiencies
  • Foster and encourage a research-based culture and promote participation in clinical research activities which ensure high quality service provision

About you

To be successful within this role you will need to have:

  • University obtained Bachelor Degree in Social Work or
  • Division One registration with endorsement as a midwife with APHRA
  • Eligibility for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) or relevant professional body
  • Embodies the Women’s values of courage, passion, discovery and respect.
  • Have a “can do” and flexible approach.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence
  • Able to balance competing and conflicting priorities.
  • Able to prioritise and time manage effectively and efficiently.
  • Holds a professional demeanour at all times promoting respect for staff and the department.
  • Demonstrates leadership while working within a team environment.
