About the Australian Humanitarian Partnership (AHP)

The AHP is a humanitarian response and disaster management partnership between the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and six leading Australian humanitarian NGOs - CARE Australia; Caritas Australia; OXFAM Australia; Plan International Australia; Save the Children Australia; and World Vision Australia. These ANGOs have comprehensive consortium arrangements and extensive local civil society networks in the Asia-Pacific and globally.

The AHP is entering is entering a second five-year phase.

The AHP Support Unit

The AHP Support Unit (AHPSU) was established at the outset of the Partnership. It is funded by DFAT and managed by Alinea International. The AHPSU represents a compact, agile and responsive team that works closely with all AHP NGO partners and local partnerships and networks, DFAT humanitarian and disaster risk reduction sections within the Humanitarian, NGOs and Partnership Division and other humanitarian stakeholders.

The AHPSU consists of a number of key positions including Partnership Director, Operations & Grants Manager, MEL Manager, Disaster READY Coordinator, Communications & Visibility Manager and supporting staff.

The AHP Communications Specialist

The AHP Communications Specialist will support and maximise the visibility of the AHP Disaster READY program, in a manner that is timely, accurate and engaging. In close collaboration with the AHPSU Communications & Visibility Manager, and working in partnership with Disaster READY country committees, the Communications Specialist will design and deliver public diplomacy products (including written and visual products) to highlight the contribution of the Disaster READY program to Pacific preparedness and resilience. The position will support DFAT’s communications through timely provision of quality briefings and social media outputs.

Selection Criteria

Required

  • Demonstrated experience in media and communications and /or equivalent writing experience (e.g. writing briefing and communications material for Government).
  • Confident in establishing and maintaining relationships across a number of stakeholders (DFAT, NGOs and other organisations and development programs) particularly in the Pacific and Timor-Leste.
  • Ability to produce high quality media and communications materials within short timeframes and balance competing demands.
  • Demonstrated experience with any of a number of communications skills including graphic design, photography/videography, website development, social media development etc
  • Proficiency in media suites and tools (for example Adobe Creative Cloud, specifically InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Adobe Spark); website development tools etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing external service providers.

Desirable

  • Experience in the humanitarian assistance and /or international development sector and /or an understanding of Australia’s humanitarian sector and/or aid and development programs.
  • Experience writing briefing and communications material for Government.
  • Experience working with the DFAT, at both Canberra and Posts, specifically Pacific Posts.

Remuneration

This is a part-time position (a minimum 2 days per week). A competitive salary (pro-rata) will be offered with final remuneration negotiated based on experience.
