Adviser to Dr Tim Read - Community Engagement and Local Campaigns

Tim Read MP
  • Member for Brunswick
  • Part time 0.8 or Full Time (0.7 salaried + 0.3 casual contract)

Who we are:

Tim was elected to the Victorian lower house in 2018, as the member for Brunswick and is Greens state spokesperson for health, justice and integrity.

We are a small, collaborative team working for positive outcomes for the Brunswick electorate, and on the big issues like: climate change, sustainable transport, schools and social justice. We pride ourselves on being responsive and innovative and on our attention to detail.

The role is responsible for:

  • Engaging and building relationships with schools, sporting clubs, community groups.
  • Meeting individual constituents in the electorate, or responding to their emails and calls, and helping them resolve issues (e.g. public housing, education, health, planning, transport) or to listen to their ideas.
  • Developing and working on local campaigns such as: funding for local schools, bicycle infrastructure, pedestrian safety and accessibility for people with disabilities. This includes identifying opportunities, helping organise events, writing and designing leaflets, petitions, web pages, arranging departmental/stakeholder briefings, writing questions for Parliament, and more.
  • Writing to, and arranging meetings with Government Ministers, Council and police.
  • Organising community outreach, and attending local events with the MP.
  • Working with other Greens MPs’ offices to ensure our constituent services are coordinated and effective across all state portfolios.
  • Occasionally managing volunteers and interns.

This role requires:

  • Values that align with the Greens’ values of social justice, environmental sustainability, and grassroots democracy.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to track and manage competing priorities and meet deadlines. We have a small team and sometimes you will need to work alone.
  • Empathy, listening skills and enthusiasm for working one-on-one with residents on a range of complex issues, including public housing, accessing local services and helping them navigate government departments and agencies.
  • Interest in working in a political environment and in campaigning for outcomes on a wide range of issues from climate change to pedestrian crossings.
  • Skill in writing for different audiences. You could be writing letters to Ministers, website content, flyers for local groups or even speeches.
  • Willingness to maintain a friendly and approachable manner with people of all backgrounds and personalities and to develop strong relationships.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality about all aspects of your work.
  • The ability to digest a large amount of information and identify what is important.
  • Familiarity with the Brunswick electorate is desirable and is helpful in this role.
  • Willingness to contribute towards a positive workplace culture.

Direct experience in campaign, policy or Parliamentary work is not necessary, but you’ll need to learn quickly to support the team in these areas. Your primary responsibility will be helping local constituents and on local campaigns.

We want someone who cares about people with a high degree of empathy and who loves to help and build relationships, but also knows how to manage their time and energy effectively.
