The Role

This position is responsible for contributing to, and overseeing a team of Carbon Project Officers and delivering, the technical development of land sector carbon projects. This position will work closely with staff around Australia to identify and implement carbon projects that adhere to approved land-based methodologies. You will also be involved in the exploration of new carbon methodologies and other environmental credit opportunities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identify, assess technical feasibility and develop new carbon projects with land managers, clients and investors
  • Manage a team of Reforestation Carbon Project Officers to effectively deliver project services.
  • Advise and guide current and potential clients in respect to carbon markets within the constraints of an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL)
  • Support negotiation and management of carbon contracts with clients
  • Public presentations and representation at carbon related conferences
  • Submissions to government regarding the development of Australian carbon market policy
  • Engagement with relevant regulators and public policy processes around carbon in Australia and develop and maintain relationships to allow as much policy certainty as possible
  • Involvement with peak industry bodies
  • Maintain and improve standard processes, templates and procedures that embed the carbon production model within Greening Australia and maintains Canopy’s Code of Conduct compliance
  • Undertake project reporting, auditing and carbon credit issuance processes as required by the Clean Energy Regulator

Essential Experience

  • Degree in environmental management / science or related discipline
  • Extensive experience in carbon markets in Australian / international jurisdictions
  • Project development experience with Australia's carbon markets particularly relating to the production of ACCUs (full life cycle)
  • Experience managing staff and project budgets
  • Established relationships and networks within Australia's carbon industry (Clean Energy Regulator, Carbon Market Institute, auditors, project developers, clients, major land managers, etc)

Desirable Experience

  • Post graduate qualifications in environmental management, science or related discipline
  • Understanding and experience with implementing blue carbon, human induced regeneration, or soil carbon
  • Previous experience as an authorised representative of an AFSL
  • Extensive landholder and corporate carbon client networks
  • Experience with large-scale project development and delivery under the Australian Government's Emissions Reduction Fund
  • Demonstrated competence in commercial negotiations and in maintaining commercial relationships
