The Role

The Coastal and Wetland Modeller (CWM) develops coastal ecosystem service models and wetland hydrology models to support TNC Australia’s blue carbon and conservation blue finance programs. They maintain databases and provide technical support in modelling, environmental accounting, GIS or other relational database technologies to Conservancy staff. 

The CWM participates in conservation science at various levels, overseeing the development and delivery of spatial ecosystem service models and wetland hydrodynamic models to support blue carbon and other ecosystem service mapping and valuation. They will be an integral member of the Oceans Conservation Team, providing technical support to projects focused on blue carbon, environmental insurance, environmental economic accounting, and conservation finance. They are responsible for establishing and maintaining spatial ecosystem service models using existing modelling platforms and programs, such as InVEST, SWAT and AIRES and basic wetland hydrodynamic models to assess restoration actions and sea level rise on the hydrology of drained wetlands.

They are also responsible for associated data management, including developing and maintaining all documentation for data and data management. They perform data analysis; design and produce advanced complex queries and professional reports, processes spatial and other relational data sets derived from cartographic and tabular source material and provide hardware/software support. The CWM produces maps and other graphic products and reports.  They develop and maintain a GIS library and/or database products library and compile, assemble and maintain environmental, biodiversity and land management information from various sources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversees the development and delivery of spatial ecosystem service models and wetland hydrodynamic models, including data collection, management, and curation.
  • Provides information and advice to project team members, external stakeholders.
  • Communicates project and modelling outcomes to internal and external audiences.
  • May help develop and manage work plans and associated project budgets.
  • May negotiate and contract with vendors.
  • Collaborate with wide range of stakeholders to obtain different data sources and advice.
  • Ensure integrity of both data collection and management relating to conservation projects and project statistics.
  • Under limited supervision acts independently, resolves complex issues within the program area and may act as a resource to others.
  • Assist with writing and production of reports, peer-reviewed publications and may present at conferences and public forums.

 Required Experience

  • MS or BS degree and certification in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience and strong interest in flooding, nature-based solutions, blue carbon, and environmental accounting GIS capability.
  • Managing, maintaining, and populating databases and manual files.
  • Interpretation of image analysis, complex spatial analysis, data modelling and landscape scenario analysis.
  • Experience managing multiple projects.
  • GIS software (preferably ESRI product), analysing data and producing data reports and creating maps.
  • Previous experience or knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software.
  • Experience interpreting results then developing and delivering training (if required) to practitioners.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and geographic region(s).
  • Managing and prioritising tasks from multiple sources and meeting deadlines.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of other languages given international stakeholder interactions will be highly advantageous, but not a minimum requirement.

Location and Salary

Preferred locations are Melbourne or Sydney, other locations of Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane can also be considered for the right candidate. This position is being offered as a 2 year fixed term contract with a Grade 5 salary range of $77,440 per annum to $96,800 per annum plus 10% superannuation, plus generous employee benefits and flexible working arrangements.
