Talent Nation

The Company

Stop Food Waste Australia (SFWA) is a powerful partnership of organisations who operate along the farm-to-fork food supply chain that are committed to reducing Australia’s food waste by half by 2030.

SFWA’s high level purpose is to work with the supporting partners to establish and manage a voluntary agreement program with agri-food businesses, state and local governments and other key stakeholders to reduce food waste and food insecurity and unlock new value from surplus food and the materials in food waste streams.

The Role

The Technical Specialist will work closely with the Head of the Voluntary Agreement Program, the Voluntary Agreement Manager and the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to manage the development and delivery of signatories’ food waste action plans and the projects therein.

The role will also provide SFWA and their signatories with technical expertise and leadership with a specific focus on food processing and manufacturing (across all products and commodities). The Technical Specialist will support the delivery of technical projects and initiatives to deliver against SFWA goals, and represent SFWA externally, developing strong relevant senior level contacts with national and international partners, industry, professional institutes and peak industry bodies (or equivalent).

This role reports directly to the Head of the Voluntary Commitment at Stop Food Waste Australia. The location for this role will be Melbourne or Sydney and will also require travel throughout Australia, including to the FFWL Head Office in Adelaide.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide technical design and execution of technical projects and solutions which are critical to the delivery of the voluntary agreement and provide specialist technical input to develop the evidence base, practical tools and technical support needed to catalyse change. This role has a specific focus on food manufacturing and processing businesses across all products/commodities.
  • Work with signatory businesses to ensure they identify and deliver actions and changes that contribute high impact towards voluntary agreement targets. This role will motivate them to use the tools and resources available and provide technical advice and support.
  • Persuade businesses to invest in engaging and influencing their suppliers and customers to make changes that contribute to voluntary agreement targets and provide technical support to them in this process.
  • Maintain and develop SFWA’s relevant expertise and capabilities by building personal expertise and developing that of others in the programme area, keeping up to date on technical developments applicable to the food sector and with the business priorities and market factors affecting signatories.
  • Establish positive, deep working relationships with decision-makers at senior and operational levels across a portfolio of Australia’s most influential food and beverage businesses to secure commitment, changes in key behaviours (including buying, design, marketing and measurement) and a financial contribution towards SFWA’s objectives and targets.
  • Ensure business accounts report reliably on their progress towards voluntary agreement targets and help them act on this information to focus future effort.
  • Work closely with communications colleagues to contribute to events and publications as appropriate.

About You

This role will suit someone either at early career stage or more experienced as SFWA can provide mentoring and further development. Irrespective of experience level, you will be looking to help build the capability and scale of Stop Food Waste Australia as well as imparting knowledge and empowering businesses and industry, to ensure the target of halving food waste in Australia by 2030 is realised.

You’ll appreciate what is required in a small team, enjoy wearing many hats and demonstrate a willingness to do what it takes to get things done.

Experience wise, ideally you will possess:

  • Knowledge of the food supply chain, with specific regard to food processing and manufacturing, with well-developed network and industry experience.
  • Evidence of or desire to engage leading food businesses along the supply chain to deliver impact.
  • Analytical ability, specifically in the context of diagnosing problems and priorities and developing solutions.
  • Relationship management experience or desire to build this experience

The culture is collaborative, collegiate, and flexible with ambitious people passionate about making a difference at scale and speed.

From a personal job satisfaction point of view, you will also get the opportunity to really build something unique and critically important to reduce food waste in Australia with the benefit of the model being successful overseas and now being taken up by some of the largest food retailers here locally.
