TOM: Melbourne creates and builds products that help improve the lives of people with disability, where there is no obvious or current solution in the market.

We connect designers, engineers and occupational therapists (Makers) to people with disabilities (Need-Knowers) to develop technological solutions for everyday challenges. We focus on making assistive technology more accessible and affordable for people with complex needs.

TOM: Melbourne is undergoing an exciting phase of program and event growth and The Technology and Events Coordinator role is primarily responsible for events and programs within the Makeathon and TOM@Schools portfolio. This role will also support the delivery of additional programs within TOM: Melbourne’s offering.

The Technology and Events Coordinator will have a background in Engineering, Industrial Design or a relevant STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) – related background. This role is ideal for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and engaged individual who is keen to use their skills in a creative and innovative way. You will have a keen interest in creating a better, more inclusive world for all and understand how to bring others with the skills and a shared purpose together to do this.

You will have experience in event management, including the design and facilitation of programs. You will apply these skills to engage, support and encourage collaboration between Makers and Need-Knowers as well as contribute to designing program content specific to the needs of TOM: Melbourne’s cohort of students engaged in TOM’s education programs suite. A desire to work collaboratively with stakeholders, both within TOM and networking externally, will ensure that program outcomes are achieved.

The Technology and Events Coordinator role is an exceptional opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting teams of Makers and Need-Knowers to co-design products to improve the lives of people with disability. It is imperative that you are a confident facilitator who is highly organised, productive and able to work autonomously. You must be innovative, enjoy overcoming challenges and have the ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment. It is also crucial that you have a supportive but honest communication style.

TO SUCCEED IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL POSSESS

  • A big heart – you are passionate about creating positive social change and working to make a difference with high levels of empathy.
  • STEM related experience (eg. Engineering, product manufacturing and/or industrial design background/degree)
  • Strong technical knowledge and experience in the sectors that TOM operates in – particularly the intersection of technology and innovation and how this can impact the disability sector.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Event and program planning, design and delivery experience.
  • Experience in the disability sector (ideal)
  • Ability to work autonomously across a variety of projects with a small tight-knit team.
  • Strong communication skills – both written and oral.
  • Ability to support the GM and team to achieve key priorities ensuring events, programs and activities track to timelines and budget.
  • Proven skills to lead events and programs with excellent public speaking abilities.
  • A strong understanding of STEM related principles is essential for this role.
  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills, striving to deliver innovative solutions to complex societal problems.
  • Creative thinking, thirst to learn with a start-up entrepreneurial mentality, striving to do things better and learn from experience and to push boundaries.
  • Ability to multi-task, be flexible with a proactive can-do attitude and ability to handle ambiguity – not being afraid to get your hands dirty.
  • Experience as a Maker (ideal).
  • Desire to support business growth and impact through engagement with active community relationships.
  • Confidence and experience to actively participate in and contribute to meetings and public presentations.
  • Basic website design skills (Wix preferred).
  • Basic design and copywriting skills (Canva).

The successful applicant will be required to hold a current Working with Children Check, valid driver licence and have access to a car for program-related travel.
