About Us

Total Environment Centre (TEC), was established in 1972 to protect Australia’s environment. We are registered as a charity and have a long-track record as a key NGO across a wide range of areas. In 2018 we created the Australian Microplastic Assessment Project (AUSMAP - www.ausmap.org) a nationwide microplastic program using citizen science (over 40,000 hours and 800 trained to date) to document and analyse microplastic pollution around Australia; track the sources; and develop solutions.

Our hotspot map publicly reveals microplastic pollution across the nation. In partnership with Macquarie University, AUSMAP has become Australia’s leading microplastic citizen science program, and a global first. AUSMAP builds ambassadors for behaviour change and works with local communities, teachers, business and governments.

In 2021, AUSMAP was awarded the prestigious Australian Museum Eureka Award for Innovations in Citizen Science and in 2020, the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Coastal and Waterways Protection Award.

The program is growing quickly and we are recruiting new staff passionate about stopping plastic pollution.
