One of our mentees at Towards Better is on the lookout for the right addition to his team.

This role is similar to a ‘matchmaker’ or ‘resource guide’. The scope of this role has to do with volunteering, membership of groups and teams, and pursuing interests where there is the possibility of developing relationships with others. The connector will get to know the person well enough to highlight their gifts and talents, develop role opportunities, find things that form ‘the bridge’ between him and others, find and develop the right role, aim for contribution, utilising effective strategies, and communicating effectively with others.

The man the connecter will have the opportunity to work alongside is a 41-year-old who is an employee in the automotive industry, a tenant who likes to keep a nice home, a licensed driver, club member, woodturner, dog owner, hobby business owner, and passionate about hands-on trades skills and the outdoors. He wants support to live his vision for a good life in the Townsville community where he is known and knows other local citizens, has a typical social life especially outside of work hours on nights and weekends, and holds valued roles such as a friend, boyfriend, volunteer, student, hobby group member, etc. He needs support to communicate, find and develop role opportunities, develop and maintain relationships, to maintain a positive image, develop new skills/competencies, and create strategies to get to and from places during the night times.

Ideally, you are someone who believes that everyone has gifts and strengths and something to contribute and that individuals with disabilities can have rich relationships with other non-disabled people. You are also someone who is happy to take action to find roles that are typical and valued for someone else who is a similar age and gender, is a creative thinker that believes in ordinary community life, and is patient and willing to communicate with other citizens and connect them to the person you work alongside.

Furthermore, this person would also have availability on some weekdays after 5:30pm, and Saturdays or Sundays after 1pm and be open anywhere between 3-15 hours per week. Must have driver's license, reliable insured vehicle, ABN, and insurance. Ongoing training and mentoring will be provided.
