ABOUT TMSG

Townsville Multicultural Support Group Inc. (TMSG) is a not-for-profit organisation that is subcontracted by Multicultural Australia Ltd to welcome people who arrive through the Australian Government Humanitarian Program and people who arrive as migrants to Townsville and surrounds. People who arrive as refugees and migrants are keen to embrace and contribute to Australia, and bring hope, skills, ambition and resilience. Our teams support them in three key ways:

  • The Welcome team ensures a friendly, culturally appropriate welcome and ensures smooth management of finance and administration.

  • The Settlement team supports refugees and migrants in their initial settlement, with access to major community services and access to education, employment, recreational support through information and referral for the first five years of being in Australia. 

  • The Community Engagement team delivers programs in partnership with other community services designed to facilitate mutual engagement and education between newly emerging communities as they settle.

About the role

The General Manager will provide leadership for TMSG’s management and staff to “inspire our community to embrace cultural diversity”. The General Manager is responsible for safeguarding TMSG’s reputation for quality, compassionate and evidence-based practice.  The General Manager demonstrates an inclusive leadership style and engages respectfully with all stakeholders.  

Reports To: TMSG Management Committee

The role of General Manager is to work collaboratively with the Management Committee to position the organisation as an effective and inclusive force within the community; this will be achieved by:

  • Working collaboratively with the President and Management Committee to develop and implement the TMSG’s Strategic Plan to meet the growing and dynamic demands faced by the organisation.
  • Demonstrating the ability to operationalise TMSG’s Strategic Plan.
  • Growing TMSG’s income streams, aligned with the organisation’s purpose and strategic pillars as well as developing potential partnerships/collaborations.
  • Leading program design, grant/submission development to encourage growth and maintain the sustainability of the organisation.
  • Managing all government, sub-contracting, and other potential contractual obligations.
  • Being the voice ‘at the table’ across all levels of government, focussed on the successful and inclusive settlement of regional refugee groups. 
  • Managing a collaborative relationship with key Settlement Peak Bodies. 
  • Positioning TMSG as the lead agency to support student placement/training across a range of professions, to influence and determine inclusive best practice.   
  • Leading and supporting the management and staff to develop local partnerships to influence successful inclusive settlement strategies across the Townsville region. 
  • Providing quality role modelling to support management and staff to live the organisation’s Purpose and Guiding Principles. 

KNOWLEDGE and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Essential

  • A tertiary degree in Business/Management/Law and/or five years current industry experience in managing and growing a successful business.
  • Sound financial management skills including contract management across all levels of government.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and building staff capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading, managing and supporting team members to achieve the organisation’s Strategic Pillars as stated in the Strategic Plan. 
  • Demonstrated high level communication skills appropriate to a culturally diverse environment. 
  • Demonstrated experience in project planning and design, submission/tender writing, and processes.
  • Ability to advocate for and role model inclusion across services and the capacity to influence strategies for local inclusive policies and outcomes for the Townsville community.
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral, written, and verbal communication that ensures the delivery of high-quality tenders, project plans, evaluation reports, briefing papers, meeting facilitation and other relevant functions of the role.
  • Sound computer literacy, including proficiency in the Microsoft suite of products.

Desired:

  • A tertiary degree in human services/social work/psychology/social policy and/or demonstrated relevant extensive industry or lived experience.
  • Demonstrated high degree of knowledge and understanding of the benefits of a multicultural society and a commitment to social justice and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated experience and high level of understanding across all levels of government policy in relation to the safe and welcoming management of migrants and humanitarian arrivals in a regional location.
  • Demonstrated understanding of challenges and opportunities experienced by new arrivals.

Desirable Registrations:

  • Eligibility for registration with Professional Association 
  • Or other relevant organisations.
