The Karratha Women's Refuge operates within the Western Australian Division of The Salvation Army Australian Territory (TSA). The Refuge is funded by the Department of Communities to provide short-medium term accommodation for women with (or without children) who are facing homelessness as a result of Family Violence and/or crisis. Our team of nine includes;

  • 4 Case Workers
  • 5 Family Support Workers The refuge has four self-contained family rooms and a shared lounge/common room. The service provides case management, risk assessment & safety planning, advocacy, referral and outreach support.

The position of Support Worker (Sleepover) is responsible and accountable for the delivery to women and their accompanying children affected by domestic and family abuse and/or experiencing homelessness to achieve housing stability, improve social inclusion and be equipped for participation in the wider community. This position is a permanent night shift position and is a lone worker.

Key activities include

  • Building rapport and establishing effective relationships that support service delivery and help clients to feel welcome and safe.
  • Assisting with transport as required and prepare units for new intakes.
  • Assisting clients with immediate safety needs that may include mindfulness, de-escalation, hospital assistance, family support, relocation, police assistance, etc.
  • Providing safety education, family violence education and parenting support where required.
  • Assisting with exit planning and exit follow up as needed.
  • Liaising with on-call leadership team when responding to high risk or critical incidents.
  • Responding to emergency situations which includes (but not limited to) severe illness or injury, fire or other evacuation situations, severe anxiety, suicidal ideation, major conflict or premises breach.

This is a permanent part-time position, located within Karratha.

Salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 - Social & Community Services Level 3.

Our ideal candidate will have

  • Associate diploma with relevant experience; or relevant certificate with relevant experience, or experience attained through previous appointments, services and/or study of an equivalent level of expertise and/or experience to undertake the range of activities required.
  • Relevant experience with family & domestic violence and homelessness.
  • Current driver's license.
  • Working with Children's Check.
  • Current Senior First Aid Certificate.
