About the organisation

Our client the Mount Druitt Ethnic Communities Agency (MECA) is a small independent community-based organisation dedicated to informing, linking and empowering people from culturally diverse backgrounds to enhance a culturally rich and diverse Australia.

MECA works with local people to identify the needs of and improve settlement services to migrants, refugees, and emerging communities in the suburbs of Mount Druitt and the wider Blacktown LGA by providing appropriate orientation, information, referrals, and assistance. The organisation also provides specialist youth services, which include community development, youth leadership, and education and learning programs. And also works with communities, individuals, Government, and service providers to promote community capacity building and social cohesion.

About the opportunity

Overseeing a team of 7, this role has strategic as well as operational responsibilities to ensure MECA is able to meet its stated objectives in line with its obligations to clients, funding bodies, partners, staff and other relevant stakeholders.

The aim of this position is to consult the management committee and other relevant stakeholders to define and implement strategic and operational objectives. This involves representing the management committee at various levels, directly managing a team of front-line staff, planning and reporting on services and programs, establishing and building relationships and partnerships with external parties, promoting MECA, sourcing and attracting funding opportunities, as well as sourcing and negotiating with suitable service providers to align MECA infrastructure with its service imperatives.

The role is Permanent Full Time at 35 hours per week, working Monday to Friday.

Salary for this role is classified at level 8 in the NSW SCHADS Award (Pay Point to be determined based on experience). The role is based in Mt Druitt, however some travel inside the Blacktown LGA therefore may be required.

What you’ll need to succeed

You will be an experienced leader not only in managing staff but in steering the strategic direction of an organisation. Your skills in governance of a community organisation will be strong including financial control and budgeting, promotion, and fundraising. Importantly you will also have extensive experience in the area of multicultural services and settlement of newly arrived communities, including refugees.

Selection Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications e.g. social work, community development, public policy
  • Demonstrated management skills and experience including organisational planning and development, human resource management, financial management, Work Health & Safety and marketing / promotional skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of and experience in working with newly arrived migrants, refugees and emerging CALD communities
  • Demonstrated commitment to addressing social justice and equity principles as they relate to settlement issues
  • Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills including the ability to produce written reports and funding submissions
  • Experience in community development, project management and the delivery of community programs and events
  • Experience networking with multidisciplinary services and agencies and the ability o build and foster sector relationships within a changing climate
  • Conceptual skills with sound analytical and problem solving abilities
  • Computer skills
  • Current Driver’s Licence valid in NSW with access to a vehicle and willing to use for work related purposes
  • Experience in non-government organisations (desirable)
  • Experience in working with a Management Committee (desirable)
