headspace is Australia's National Youth Mental Health Foundation. headspace aims to reduce the burden of disease in young people aged 12-25 years caused by mental health and related substance use disorders through early identification and effective, evidence-based intervention. headspace Primary Care is works with young people ages 12 to 25 who are experiencing mild to moderate mental health concerns. Young people are able to access centres in person or via phone and see or speak to a Primary Care clinician.

Role Overview:

This position is instrumental in developing, implementing, evaluation and reporting against the community development strategy and related activities focused on building the capacity of the community to identify and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and be able to respond to mental health concerns.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Support the recruitment of the Families and Friends Advisory Committee (FAFC) alongside the Peer Support Coordinator to ensure representation from the programs
  2. Support the Peer Support Coordinator and the FAFC in the development of resources, activities and events to engage consumers and their families
  3. Coordinate youth participation by means of the youth advisory committee meetings and support the YPC in the YAC integration strategy across program sites.
  4. Ensure all data reporting is maintained, including marketing collateral.
  5. Participate with management in development of community awareness and community education strategy and ensure implementation of the strategy

Essential Criteria:

  1. Appropriate certificate relevant to the work required to be performed i.e. health promotion, social work, psychology, community development/engagement or related equivalent.
  2. Previous experience in a relevant industry, service or an equivalent level of expertise and experience to undertake the range of activities required.
  3. Undertake a range of activities requiring the application of established work procedures and may exercise limited initiative and/or judgment within clearly established procedures and/or guidelines
  4. Ability to develop, document, monitor and report on community awareness strategies and plans within established guidelines and frameworks
  5. Demonstrated ability to independently manage time, plan and organise own workload.
  6. Willingness to oversee or support volunteers or students undertaking certificate level. studies
  7. Sound knowledge of mental health within health promotion and the community sector.
  8. Experience in facilitating Community Development initiatives and projects as well as assisting seniors as required.
  9. Demonstrated ability to consult with a wide range of stakeholders to develop local referral networks and implement community awareness and education campaigns within established guidelines or procedures
  10. Basic skills in oral and written communication with clients and other members of the public and ability to communicate and relate to young people age 12-25
  11. Basic Computer literacy in Windows Office programs and ability to produce newsletters and health promotion resources
  12. Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends for events as required 13. Current driver’s license  

Desirable Criteria (if applicable):

  1. Experience in collaborative partnerships with government or non-government organisations, including working with a range of community partners.
  2. Experience working with specific populations of young people (e.g. Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander populations, CALD, LTBGQI+ communities)
  3. Previous experience developing or implementing group programs with a youth focus (headspace)
