The UNSW Business School (Business School) is a leader in business education and research in the Asian region and one of the largest business schools in Australia with more than 17,000 students, 500 academic and professional staff and more than 100,000 alumni and partners. Why Your Role Matters:

The Centre for Social Impact (CSI) is a national research and education centre dedicated to catalysing social change for a better world. CSI is led by a national team (CSI National) and is comprised of four divisions based in four of Australia’s leading universities: UNSW Sydney (CSI UNSW), University of Western Australia (CSI UWA), Flinders University (CSI Flinders) and Swinburne University of Technology (CSI Swinburne). CSI’s research develops and brings together knowledge to understand current social challenges and opportunities. CSI’s postgraduate, undergraduate and executive education develops social impact leaders. CSI’s aim is to catalyse change by drawing on these foundations and translating knowledge, creating leaders, developing usable resources, and reaching across traditional divides to facilitate collaborations.

CSI UNSW comprises approximately 40 staff across research, education, centre operations, and marketing & communications. CSI UNSW is located on the UNSW Sydney campus (Kensington) and is part of the UNSW Business School. It leads engagements with industry, government, students, alumni, professional bodies, and the community. The CSI National CEO is co-located at UNSW with CSI UNSW.

The CSI UNSW Director is responsible for overseeing the strategic and operational leadership of CSI UNSW and ensuring CSI UNSW contributes effectively to CSI’s broader national strategy and collaboration. This includes overseeing CSI UNSW’s education and research quality; CSI UNSW’s budget performance; the performance and professional development of team members against KPIs; and CSI UNSW’s performance against the strategies of CSI, the UNSW Business School and UNSW’s strategy. The CSI UNSW Director position is a leadership role which works closely with the CEO, CSI National Executive Team, UNSW Business School Senior Leadership Team, and key external partners.

This position is a full-time, 5-year fixed-term role that reports to the Senior Deputy Dean (Academic) in the UNSW Business School and is a member of the Business School Executive Committee. A continuing appointment to a relevant School is negotiable for a candidate with the relevant experience and background. The role also has a reporting line to the National CSI CEO, consistent with the other University Directors across Australia.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the implementation and delivery of the strategic vision for CSI UNSW that is aligned to the Business School and University Strategy and CSI National, ensuring team engagement in realising that vision and coordinating activity against the operating plan.
  • Establish and maintain a collegial, supportive, and productive culture within the Centre.
  • Provide leadership for the implementation of the UNSW Business School’s Social Impact Strategy and accelerates the UN’s Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME).
  • Develop, lead, and deliver research, education and catalytic activities ensuring alignment to the CSI strategy, the UNSW Business School strategy and UNSW’s 2025 strategy.
  • Collaborate effectively and regularly with colleagues across the CSI National Network in developing the CSI Network’s next strategic vision and play a role in developing CSI National Network’s programs as a member of the National Executive Team.
  • Ensure CSI UNSW operates effectively and efficiently including optimising the allocation of resources, operating within budget, and meeting relevant legislative and compliance obligations.  

Who You Are:

  • A respected scholar in research and/or educator and an appreciation of the values and roles of a major research university operating in an international context.
  • A PhD in a discipline relevant to CSI and the Business School and/or a combination of experience and postgraduate qualifications.
  • Capacity to articulate and clearly communicate, internally and externally, a strategic vision for CSI UNSW that aligns to CSI’s National Strategy and the ability to lead and manage staff at a range of levels to achieve the vision. 
  • An inclusive, proactive and energetic leader with extensive management experience in a University, ability to work collaboratively and professionally, motivate high performance from diverse groups of people across the Centre, and to have crucial conversations with under-performing staff where necessary.
  • A breadth of vision and intellectual enthusiasm that encompasses a range of education and research areas relevant to CSI UNSW and the UNSW Business School.
  • Have a demonstrated understanding of the UNs Sustainable Development Goals and Principles of Responsible Management Education.
  • A sustained scholarly record of accomplishment in a discipline related to social impact demonstrated by recent high-quality publications that support the Business School’s goals. and objectives and a record of accomplishment of research grants/funding and impact – assessed in terms of reach and significance.
