The Opportunity

UNSW is seeking an outstanding Program Leader who will be based within the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications and seconded to the Reliable Affordable Clean Energy for 2030 Cooperative Research Centre (RACE for 2030 CRC). This role will be to lead the RACE for Homes Research Program that is one of four programs within RACE for 2030 CRC.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in Australia’s clean energy transition and to join one of the largest ever cooperative research efforts in Australia, with more than 70 industry, research and government partners. As the Program Leader RACE for Homes, you will be managing up to $3 million in cash and $6 million in kind per annum for research. This is a Strategic and Delivery Leadership role where you will be accountable for developing, managing, monitoring, and reporting on projects within the RACE for Homes research program through all phases of the project lifecycle, to ensure high quality, high impact, industry relevant research.

  • Senior Professional role - Level 10 ($166k to $183k p.a. package inclusive of super)

  • Fixed-Term role – 2 years (extendable)
  • Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia

Skills and Experience

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification and/or extensive relevant experience.
  • Proven track record as a research program manager or equivalent, with an in-depth understanding of the project life cycle and strategic development of project plans, objectives and documentation.
  • Extensive knowledge of clean energy technology and policy, particularly in relation to clean energy, energy efficiency, load management, tariff design, customer behaviour and distributed energy in the residential sector.
  • Proven project management experience on projects with budgets above $1m
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgement and problem solving with the ability to resolve and address issues as they arise
  • Experience in developing industry-focused research projects and building and managing collaborative relationships with external stakeholders including government and industry.
  • Demonstrated success in developing partnerships with industry and research institutes and facilitating industry engagement.
  • Proven enthusiastic leadership with demonstrated experience in supervision and mentoring staff and fostering a positive team culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication, negotiation and consultation skills, including an ability to exercise initiative, tact and discretion in dealing with highly sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Business experience outside academia is highly desirable (direct industrial leadership experience is considered an advantage).
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
