Why your role matters:

The School of Social Sciences is seeking a Research Associate to support the data collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data from various sources relevant to the aims of the project, including interviews and file reviews. This role will also be co-ordinating high level interstate meetings with academics, partner and peak organisations.

The role of Research Associate reports to Senior Lecturer and Chief Investigator, School of Social Sciences and has no direct reports. This project is a joint venture between UNSW and Monash University in Melbourne which provides a unique opportunity of working across two highly reputable institutions.

This study examines the link between girls declared ‘missing’ and their trajectory into the criminal justice system, expanding the Australian knowledge base along with providing a clear, tangible practice framework to prevent the
drift into youth and adult criminal justice systems. By addressing concerns of practitioners and policy makers this significant research increases the visibility of a marginalised groups, exploring individual and systemic impacts of missing girls entering the criminal justice and welfare systems. Findings of this research will detail opportunities for early intervention for service providers in addition to rich empirical data to better inform policy makers and service developers targeting at risk young people.

This position is being offered for three years fixed term. The first two years will be 0.5 FTE (17.5 hours per week) and the final 3rd year will be 0.2 FTE (7 hours per week).

The successful incumbent can be based in either Melbourne or Sydney and can work from home. There may be adhoc travel required in this role.

Who you are:

To be successful in this role you will have:

• A tertiary degree in social work, criminology, social sciences or other relevant degree and experience, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any combination of qualifications, training and experience.
• Clinical or research experience working with vulnerable groups including women and First National people and communities.
• Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including First Nations stakeholders.
• Experience or interest in qualitative data analysis.
• Capacity to deliver on research and writing tasks to a high quality within agreed deadlines.
• Capacity to prepare and present findings in an accessible way for a variety of audiences
