Make a Difference for Tasmania: Expressions of Interest for the UTAS Animal Ethics Committee

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone with an interest in supporting research.

The University of Tasmania Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) is currently recruiting for Category D members. The role of the AEC is to ensure the ethical, humane and responsible care and use of animals used for scientific purposes and to review research proposals in line with the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.

This committee reviews a wide range of proposals for the University, including student projects, teaching projects, and research involving rodents, wildlife and marine life.

The role of the Category D member is defined as:

  • A person not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution and who has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either in their employment or beyond their undergraduate education. Category D members should be viewed by the wider community as bringing a completely independent view to the AEC, and must not fit the requirements of any other category.

Membership involves attending at least one meeting per month, conducted via Zoom, as well as reading and reviewing ethics submissions prior to the meeting.
