Make a Difference for Tasmania: Expressions of Interest for the UTAS Human Research Ethics Committee

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone with an interest in volunteering to support human research.

The University of Tasmania Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) is currently recruiting for pastoral carer members. The role of the HREC is to ensure human research proposals have merit and reflect the ethical values of justice, beneficence and respect for humans, is acceptable to the Australian community and meets the requirements of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. This committee reviews a wide range of proposals for University research but also from the Tasmanian Health Service. Applications range from student projects through to clinical trials.

The HREC has various member categories, with the role of the pastoral carer member defined as:

  • A person who performs a pastoral care role in a community. This may include Aboriginal elders, individuals involved in social outreach or social work, non-ordained or ‘lay’ members of a religious community, or individuals who provide or lead social or health programs, such as youth mentoring or drug and alcohol programs, or who perform pastoral care roles in hospitals, schools, universities or other organisations (e.g. people that have a support role but are not counsellors).

Membership involves attending at least one meeting per month which is conducted via zoom, as well as reading and reviewing ethics submissions prior to the meeting.

Go to https://www.utas.edu.au/research-admin/research-integrity-and-ethics-unit-rieu/ethics-committees for detailed information about membership and the process to apply.
