Public Health Nutritionist - Senior Project Officer

The Population Health and Sector Development team at VACCHO are seeking a part time/full time Public Health Nutritionist to join our organisation.

The purpose of the Public Health Nutritionist position is to combine evidence-based nutrition and project management expertise to build the capacity of VACCHO and VACCHO Member organisations using a holistic health and strength-based approach to health promotion and primary health care.

This capacity building occurs through organisational development, workforce training, strategic partnerships, stakeholder relationships, health information resources and campaigns, and state-wide leadership and advocacy. Evidence-based practice is a key function of the role, both in terms of using and contributing to the evidence base.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and deliver the planning, implementation and evaluation of projects and services, ensuring all deliverables and milestones are met as per contracts/proposals.
  • Work with Executive Manager to monitor project budgets and timelines. Support the development and implementation of robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks for projects.
  • Prepare and deliver high level reports and related documents for funders and project partners, across various projects.
  • Foster relationships with State and Local Government representatives in order to build the capacity of the preventative health system to meet the needs of the local Aboriginal populations.
  • Provide nutrition and physical activity expertise within VACCHO, to Member Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO’s) and other Aboriginal organisations who are wishing to implement nutrition and physical activity services or programs, with self-determination and co-design embedded into all support provided.
  • Develop and manager strategic partnerships to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Victoria.

Experience and qualifications that we require from you:

  • A tertiary qualification in public health nutrition and/or dietetics.
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to Victorian Aboriginal health, Aboriginal culture, and the philosophy and practice of Aboriginal Community Control.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Aboriginal organisations, Communities and individuals in culturally appropriate ways as well as non-Aboriginal health organisations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Strong organisational, project and task management skills, including the ability to effectively manage time and workload, prioritise tasks, and meet changing circumstances, competing demands, interruptions and deadlines.
  • Highly developed written communication skills, with proven ability to prepare a range of documents including reports, quality literature and guidelines and general correspondence.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to liaise effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders and organisations. An ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships, characterised by co-operation, trust and mutual respect.
  • Highly developed critical analysis skills, ability to identify and analyse problems, establish appropriate solutions and recommendations using analytical and conceptual skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage sensitive information, maintain confidentiality and remain impartial at all times.
  • Self-motivated and demonstrated ability working independently with minimal supervision. An effective team member, promoting cooperation and commitment to achieve goals and deliverables.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience using Microsoft applications (e.g. Microsoft Office 365 – Outlook, SharePoint, Word, Excel, Teams) combined with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Desirable

  • Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Knowledge or qualifications in public health and/or health promotion and population health outcomes
  • Experience in the development and provision of health education and/or training programs, specifically for Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations.
  • Interest in communication and media, is innovative and inspired by try new concepts and designs
