Villamanta is a specialist Community Legal Service based in Geelong. We provide legal services to Victorians with disabilities and prioritise people with intellectual disabilities. We are currently looking to employ a casework lawyer to fill a maternity leave position.

THE ROLE

We are seeking an enthusiastic lawyer to be part of our casework team, assisting clients with disability related legal issues, including Appeals to the AAT in NDIS matters. The position is full time or part time by negotiation.

Villamanta Disability Rights Legal Service Inc. (Villamanta) is a state-wide community legal centre that works on disability related justice issues. Villamanta’s main purpose is to make sure that Victorian people who have a disability know about the law and use the law to get their rights.

Villamanta is a free service for people who have a disability and a disability related legal issue. Villamanta is funded to run the service by the Federal Government under the National Disability Advocacy Program (NDAP) and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The services offered by Villamanta include casework, policy and law reform work, telephone information, legal advice and referral services, community legal rights education for people who have an intellectual disability and training programs.

key selection criteria

Essential

  • Eligible to hold a current practising certificate from the Legal Practice Board; 
  • Demonstrated ability to acquire necessary skill and knowledge of relevant disability legislation, NDIS legislation and state based legislation affecting persons with a disability;
  • An understanding of government policies, systemic issues and identification of potential law reform issues;
  • An understanding of the issues that affect people who have a disability;
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice principles;

Desirable

  • At least 2 years post admission experience
  • Experience in working with people who have a disability, in particular people who have an intellectual disability;
  • Ability to work effectively with a range of people and to work as part of a team;
  • Hold a current drivers’ licence.
