Very Special Kids provides holistic care for Victorian families facing the potential death of a child with a life limiting condition. We provide; counselling and emotional support for the whole family, medically-supported respite care and end of life care and long-term bereavement support. Our free-of-charge services help more than 850 families across Victoria, with ongoing support, from the child’s diagnosis all the way through to bereavement or the child joining adult services.

Our eight bed children's hospice offers planned respite and emergency respite as well as end-of-life care for children with life-threatening conditions. Most children who come to stay have complex medical and care needs. Leading the shift with our staff/patient ratio of 1:2, allows the unique opportunity for high quality care and a rewarding experience.

The Senior Registered Nurse is responsible for:

  • Leading the Shift team for the rostered shift
  • Ensuring all clinical nursing practice and delivery of care of the shift is consistent with VSK and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Standards, NSQHS Standards and accepts responsibility for professional activities that support service delivery and the professional development of self and others.
  • Providing comprehensive, safe, evidence-based practice to facilitate optimal care; performing self-assessment of scope of practice and competence related to assigned responsibilities.
  • Provision of high quality care to the children and families accessing Very Special Kids Hospice is demonstrated.
  • Demonstrating leadership in role modelling, performance counselling, Performance & Development Review discussions, coaching and mentoring
  • Works effectively as a hands on part of a skilled, creative, professional and compassionate team.
  • Leadership role/s within the Hospice e.g. National Standards, Standard Lead/Support Lead. Committee participation role, support Education within the Hospice
  • Actively participates in and contributes to initiatives that have organisational impact
  • Undertakes ongoing professional development activities for self and contributes to others’ development
  • Engages in quality improvement and research activities to improve practice

To be part of our team, you will be a Senior Registered Nurse with at least 4 + years post graduation Registered Nursing experience. You will have a passion for providing holistic, family centred care and experience working with children, families and volunteers within a health setting is desirable. Ideally you will bring demonstrated experience with nasogastric tubes, tracheostomy care, gastrostomy care and seizures, ventilators and preferably CVAD. In addition, post graduate qualifications/working towards/or preparedness to work towards same, in palliative care or related field is highly desirable.
