Walalakoo Aboriginal Corporation (‘Walalakoo’) is the Registered Native Title Representative Body Corporate (RNTBC) of the Nyikina Mangala people from the Kimberley region in Derby, Western Australia.

Working in a remote, beautiful, and affordable part of the Kimberley in Western Australia, Walalakoo Aboriginal Corporation is calling for applications for the multi-faceted position of Coordinator, Business Development.

about the role

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Business Development Coordinator is a member of the Management Team. This role is primarily responsible for identifying and assessing the financial and strategic suitability of new and ongoing business opportunities that supports Walalakoo’s mission, strategic priorities, and operating focus. The role will actively seek opportunities to increase government and other service contracts, grants, partnerships, joint ventures, new business models, and fee for service activities within Walalakoo’s core business areas. The role also focuses on developing and executing a strategy for outreach services to support promising, feasible and bankable business ideas of Nyikina Mangala entrepreneurs, to grow and thrive.

The Business coordinator will ensure development projects are delivered on time and on budget through effective project management methodology and governance. The coordinator will engage relevant internal and external stakeholders to successfully deliver activities that meets aspiration of a documented growth strategy. Finally, the coordinator will support day-to-day operations, Board governance, outreach programs, events, meetings and workshops.

The position is based in Derby and offers a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with working for a not-for-profit organisation in a remote area.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Primary responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the strategic direction of Walalakoo, including the development of its business and growth strategies and lead the implementation of new business and development projects.
  • Ensure Walalakoo’s strong financial position in any new business partnership, or development, by negotiating and structuring commercially astute deals, maximising ROI through excellence in design and consideration for long term sustainability and valuing of Impact Investment methodologies.
  • Ensure Walalakoo’s growth strategy is aligned to the organisation’s risk appetite by identifying and assessing new business opportunities for consideration by the Executive Team and the Board.
  • Lead and drive the growth of Walalakoo’s financial position through business development activity, building strategic relationships and networks and coordinating the response to tenders and submissions.
  • Lead the acquisition and development of projects from inception to completion including managing the project within budget, working with management and other colleagues and stakeholders to ensure effective co-design, coordination, collaboration, and handover for project operationalisation.

Other responsibilities:

  • Conduct feasibility studies and financial modelling with the support of the CEO and accounts team.
  • Assist Nyikina Mangala entrepreneurs to link with relevant services proposal writing, pitch deck, business development, fundraising as well as relevant linkages to established companies for business opportunities.
  • Conduct risk assessments and actively manage risks.
  • Develop project plans.
  • Complete post implementation review.
  • Undertake continuous improvement activities including but not limited to; review of completed tenders, submissions, projects, and the like, seeking feedback from funders, partners, and other stakeholders; utilising learnings to develop and maintain a best practice resource bank to support excellence and efficiency in ongoing business development work.
  • Provide support to, and actively collaborate with, the Corporate Team around matters of common interest including fundraising, marketing, and communications functions.
  • Other duties as directed by the CEO.

Applicants must address the following selection criteria:

  1. Demonstrated experience in a management role within a multidisciplinary organisation and participating as a part of an organisation’s management team.
  2. Significant experience in business development and project management.
  3. Experience and awareness of government and community sector funding streams.
  4. Experience in the development of social enterprise and Indigenous owned/led business.
  5. High level finance and business analysis skills interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills (including reports, briefing papers, business plans and presentations).
  6. Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  7. Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with people from a wide range of social-economic, multicultural, and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  8. Demonstrated understanding of issues affecting the Aboriginal and TSI Community particularly in regard to, overcoming economic disadvantage, cultural awareness and sensitivities.
  9. An understanding of the health and safety requirements relating to the position.
  10. Ability to work within the values of Walalakoo Aboriginal Corporation.

Education and experience

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in relevant fields, Business, Financial Management, Project Management.
  • At least 3 years working experience in business development, economic development or similar.
  • Ability to use computer programs, like PowerPoint, Excel, and Word processing packages
  • Strong website design/social media skills are highly desirable.
  • Networking experience -good existing networks with stakeholders.
  • Willingness to commit to working outside normal office hours on occasion and to function under
  • Ability to arrive fast at workable decisions and to adapt to working conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to support corporate governance including Board Meetings, AGMs, and day to day financial management activities.
  • Proven ability to report on the performance of projects against KPIs, including the collection and preparation of information for output/outcomes reporting.
  • A current driver’s license.
  • A willingness to submit to an Australian Federal Police and working with children checks.

Salary Package and conditions:

Up to $90,000 inclusive of:

  • Superannuation 9.5%
  • Allowances including district allowance, annual airfare where applicable, air-conditioning subsidy, rental assistance where applicable, salary sacrificing options and 5 weeks annual leave.
  • Use of company vehicle within reasonable limits.

This is a full-time role for a 12-month period with possibility of extension.
