Overview of WWAC:

The Wamba Wemba Aboriginal Corporation (WWAC) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation, focused on the preservation, promotion, and revitalisation of Wamba Wemba culture, language, and heritage. WWAC is registered with the Corporations Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Act 2006 (CATSI Act) and is a Registered Aboriginal Party.

The main objectives of the WWAC include:

  • Improving the health and wellbeing of the Wamba Wemba People;
  • Advancing the sovereignty and self-determination of the Wamba Wemba People;
  • Maintaining and strengthening the identity and culture of the Wamba Wemba People;
  • And to protect and maintain all lands claimed and to develop and implement cultural heritage programs.

Job Purpose:

The RAP Manager plays an important role in the protection, management, and promotion of Wamba Wemba Aboriginal cultural heritage, as well as RAP statutory obligations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Cultural Heritage Protection and Management

  • Oversee the assessment, preservation, and management of Wamba Wemba cultural heritage sites on-Country.
  • Ensure compliance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and other relevant regulations.
  • Monitor and respond to threats to cultural heritage sites, such as development projects or environmental changes.
  • Develop and implement strategies for the long-term protection of cultural heritage areas, such as conservation plans and land management agreements.
  • Ensure proper documentation and reporting for all cultural heritage activities, including keeping detailed records of assessments, permits, and approvals.
  • Oversee the development of internal policies and procedures related to cultural heritage management.
  • Ensure WWAC remain compliant with RAP obligations and reporting requirements.

2. Cultural Heritage Assessments

  • Lead and coordinate cultural heritage assessments, including the preparation and review of Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs).
  • Work closely with archaeologists, developers, and other stakeholders to ensure assessments are thorough and culturally appropriate.
  • Provide cultural heritage advice on land use, planning proposals, and infrastructure projects.

3. Community Engagement, Education and Advocacy

  • Engage with Traditional Owners, Elders, and community members to gather input and ensure their involvement in decisions affecting cultural heritage.
  • Represent WWAC at meetings, forums, and negotiations regarding cultural heritage matters.
  • Develop and implement educational programs and initiatives to raise awareness about Aboriginal cultural heritage among stakeholders, community members, and the public.

Key Selection Criteria:

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field such as archaeology or anthropology.
  • Experience in a similar Cultural Heritage role, preferably with a First Nations organisation.
  • Proven experience in leading engagement within a member-based organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with multiple stakeholders, including government.

  • Ability to work under limited supervision, solve problems and prioritise workload.
  • Ability to demonstrate agility and flexibility in a fast-moving, dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
