About us

Safe Steps is the only 24/7, family violence response centre in Victoria, providing a “state-wide entry point” for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence. Services include information and referral, crisis response, specialist family violence risk assessment, safety planning, Webchat, and access to supported crisis accommodation. We also provide specialist counselling nationally, through 1800RESPECT.

Our vision is safety, support and respect for all victim-survivors of domestic and family violence.

Our practice is trauma-informed and guided by evidence. We provide services to all victim-survivors and recognise that most of our work is dedicated to the needs of women and children which reflects the gendered nature of domestic and family violence.

About the role

The Intake and Assessment Manager will work across a rotating roster, taking into account Safe Steps’ 24/7 crisis service to lead a team which delivers services of a high quality, and in line with the Code of Practice for Specialist Family Violence Services and the Multi-Agency Risk Assessment and Management (MARAM) Framework. The role will manage resources to meet service demand and oversight of risk management. It will provide effective leadership of the day-to-day functions of on-site monitoring to the Intake and Assessment Team over a 24/7 period.

Responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Leading an agile response to organisational change within the context of family violence reforms and Safe Steps strategic plan
  • Providing trauma informed leadership to the Intake and Assessment team modelling adherence to service scope, MARAM, Code of Practice and Information Sharing Laws
  • Leading practice whereby all victim survivors are believed, risk factors are mitigated and safety is increased (MARAM quality and review)
  • Being a positive and constructive member of Safe Steps at all times modelling professional behaviour in line with the organisations Values and Code of Conduct
  • Demonstrating skills in prioritising the victim survivor, especially in times of high demand, organisational change and competing demands. (excellent communication skills, adherence to processes, timely action taken, develops organised work plan)
  • Ensuring all direct reports are supervised and supported to work within the boundaries of their role, to foster a calm and supportive workplace culture, to account for role functions and to accept feedback (you are able influence and earn respect of direct reports)
  • Working as part of a team to ensure service quality and Safe Steps reputation as an organisation of choice for employees
  • Managing the Intake & Assessment roster (in collaboration with the Workforce Planner) to ensure effective service provision in business and after hours service delivery (number of daily roster changes, number of calls, emails, chats missed and untimely responses)
  • Overseeing development of an annual professional development plan for all Intake and Assessment crisis specialists (plan developed and evaluated each year)
  • Ensuring Family Violence Crisis Specialists within Intake and Assessment receive supervision 12 times per year and more if required
  • Approving and managing Intake and Assessment leave according to the Safe Steps EBA (no unnecessary leave costs incurred, staff wellbeing is prioritised, leave approvals are fair and comply with policy)
  • Organising and facilitating 8 team meetings per annum
  • Developing systems and practices that focus on continuous improvement of practice alignment with MARAM, Information Sharing and the Code of Practice (at staff, meetings, training, real time supervision, supervision)
  • Mitigating and reporting Intake & Assessment incidents and risks to the Crisis Response Manager

About you

You must be able to demonstrate the following:

Essential

  • Bachelor of Social Work, Social Science or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in the field of violence against women, human rights, social justice, law reform or general advocacy
  • Extensive understanding and application in the context of crisis response
  • Willingness to commit to the living expression of Safe Steps values; courageous, feminist, empowering, ethical respectful, collaborative, reflective.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and supporting a team
  • Demonstrated understanding of feminist practice and how this is used as a framework to understand and respond to the gendered nature of violence against women and children
  • Demonstrated experience in providing administrative and clinical supervision to a team of community-based service workers
  • Demonstrated understanding of cultural and language barriers, disability and other factors that may further marginalise clients in crisis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the effects of family violence on children and an ability to conduct a comprehensive family risk assessment that gives priority to the safety of children
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to deal appropriately with stress, maintain composure and apply effective engagement strategies with clients in crisis
  • Experience or demonstrated commitment to 24-hour service delivery and the ability to provide an on-call after-hours response on a roster basis
  • A current Victorian Drivers Licence
  • A current Working with Children Check
  • Willingness to undergo a National Police Check

Desirable

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a leadership role within a social services setting working from a strength-based client-centered framework
  • Familiarisation with a range of information technology applications including SHIP and Mitel
  • Knowledge of, and established relationships within the Victorian Integrated Family Violence System
  • Relevant training in clinical supervisions and team leadership
