About the position

WEHI is establishing a human research and clinical translation team (HRCT) which will be integrated with the Institute's research themes to facilitate the institute's discovery and clinical translation goals. The HRCT will have an important role in providing expert advice and guidance in navigating the clinical, ethical and regulatory requirements, and in reducing the barriers for human-based research for WEHI researchers.

The appointee will work closely with the Heads of Clinical Translation to establish the 'Human Research and Clinical Translation Hub' and to appoint three clinical research coordinators to the team. The Human Research and Clinical Translation Manager will develop WEHI's capabilities in undertaking and managing human-based research, including patient samples, data and clinical trials, and work with other departments at WEHI to streamline clinical operations (incorporating compliance, governance and legal).

The Manager will also supervise, mentor and develop the capabilities of the three clinical research coordinators. The Manager will also manage major projects including WEHI's Attracting and Retaining Clinician-Scientists initiative and the Volunteer Blood Donor Registry.

Selection Criteria

Experience and qualifications

  • Qualifications in a clinically-related field with a strong background in clinical research in a hospital or academic setting, pharma/biotech industry, or a Contract Research Organisation.
  • Significant experience in the coordination of human-related research, including experience in the set-up and conduct of investigator-led and industry-sponsored clinical trials.
  • Experience in population-based cohort studies and/or omic-based applications in clinical studies would be highly desirable.

Knowledge and skills

  • Working knowledge on the legislation, codes and guidelines relevant to clinical research ethics and governance for undertaking human-based research.
  • Expert knowledge in Good Clinical Practice, including informed consent and privacy.
  • Ability to critically review and advise on projects involving human biospecimens and data, clinical trials and biobanking.
  • Ability to see issues from an organisation-wide capacity in order to lead or contribute to the development of solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team to meet deadlines and drive operational improvements.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing best practice policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated collaborative approach in managing projects with a number of cross-functional teams.

  • High level of energy, enthusiasm and initiative including a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Superior oral, written and interpersonal communication, leadership skills and respect for confidentiality.

Terms of appointment

This position is available for 2 years in a full-time capacity. Salary is HEW Level 9 ($121,008 - 125,899). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
