Peer Warmline and Volunteer Coordinator - Remote / Work from Home

Wilkinson Lowe P/L

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

Roses in the Ocean is a national not for profit organisation founded on and operating through the lens of lived experience of suicide. We exist to save lives and reduce emotional pain and we seek to lead the significant cultural shift needed to save lives through harnessing the perspectives of all we represent, along with our own lived experience of suicide. With our actions driven and guided by those with a lived experience of suicide, we innovate and transform suicide prevention, and drive and deliver system reform. We support organisations and government to effectively and meaningfully integrate lived experience expertise into suicide prevention.

As the lead organisation for lived experience of suicide in Australia, Roses in the Ocean (RITO) has advocated for and developed contextualised SP Peer Workforce Development Services, inclusive of curriculum, resources and support services, for the emerging suicide prevention peer workforce.

People require very specific skill development, expertise and experience to work in Peer Support Worker roles across the continuum of suicide prevention from supporting people experiencing suicidal crisis and post attempt through to carers, and those bereaved through suicide.

The rapidly growing momentum for people with a lived experience of suicide to provide critical peer support roles embedded into services, and indeed for peer led services, has put immediate pressure on the development of a specialised lived experience of suicide peer workforce, and the need for consistency across Australia in peer workforce frameworks, skill development and support structures. Alongside the paid peer workforce there exists a need and appetite for an army of volunteer suicide prevention Peer CARE Companions able to provide light touch peer support. Roses in the Ocean has piloted and is now scaling a number of national services utilising the services of these volunteers.

Roses in the Ocean pride ourselves on having successfully operated at a grass roots level within communities and at a strategic and operational level with non-government organisations, the private sector and government for the past eleven years. Driving the emerging non-clinical alternatives of care and the suicide prevention peer workforce are key projects for our organisation.

Everyone who works within Roses in the Ocean has a lived experience of suicide which is defined as ‘having experienced suicidal thoughts, survived a suicide attempt, cared for someone through suicidal crisis, or been bereaved by suicide.’
