Women Illawarra has been at the forefront of many campaigns for women’s issues. Previously Wollongong Women’s Information Service, our organisation was instrumental in the foundation of many women’s services in the Illawarra, including women’s health, housing and domestic violence services. Since opening our doors in 1979, we have provided continuous support and services to the women of the Illawarra.

The Role

The role of our Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Workers is critical in ensuring effective and timely service delivery to women and children experiencing domestic violence.

We are looking for applications from qualified women who are passionate about advocating for our clients.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the day to day response to referrals for clients experiencing domestic violence. She will be capable of conducting risk assessments for women and children as well as supplying timely information and referrals to appropriate services. Court advocacy and court support are also required in this role.

The position is 28 - 35 hours per week. The hourly rate is SCHADS Award Level 4.1. This is an office-based position. Women Illawarra offers salary packaging.

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in social work, community welfare and/or equivalent experience working in the community sector;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics, complexities and legal and social welfare consequences of domestic violence;
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with key stakeholders and other community services;
  • Sound organisational, administrative and time management skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in negotiation, advocacy and conflict resolution

The following Desirable Criteria MAY also be addressed in your application:

Desirable Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrated understanding of the criminal justice response to domestic violence including Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO) applications and criminal prosecutions and related legal matters such as family law, care and protection, migration and victim's compensation issues;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the particular needs of and challenges faced by clients from diverse communities, especially ATSI and CALD clients;
  • Ability to develop and implement service delivery strategies aimed at ensuring the relevance, accessibility and responsiveness of Local Coordination Point services to a diverse range of women and children;
  • Knowledge of and an ability to work effectively with interpreter services;
  • NSW Driver's License and access to a car
  • Knowledge of appropriate referral agencies in service area;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office

The successful applicant will be required to undertake suitability checks and a probationary period.
