There are 13 specialist Women’s Legal Services across Australia providing legal assistance and integrated support services to more than 25,000 women per year, mostly victim-survivors of domestic, family and sexual violence.

Women’s Legal Services Australia (WLSA) is the national peak organisation for specialist Women’s Legal Services. Our mission is to promote a legal system that is safe, supportive, non-discriminatory and responsive to the needs of women, particularly victim-survivors of gender-based violence.

OUR PURPOSE

WLSA’s purpose is to:

  • Engage in national advocacy for policy, law reform and systemic change to achieve justice, safety and equality for women.
  • Build the capacity of Women’s Legal Services to deliver gender-specialist, integrated legal services for women.
  • Create collaborative spaces for the network of Women’s Legal Services to work together, learn from each other and develop best practice in the delivery of high-quality services.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Policy and Projects Officer will be a key member of the WLSA team.

This role will work closely with the Executive Officer and Women’s Legal Services across the country to contribute to policy and law reform submissions, research, and policy development. The role will also coordinate national projects for Women’s Legal Services to work together collaboratively and build capacity.

This role will contribute to ending violence against women, improving laws, policies and systems, increasing access to justice, and achieving gender equality.

This is a full time or part time (minimum 3 days) position.

What you’ll need to succeed

The successful applicant will be a feminist, passionate about social justice and gender equality, and focused on building relationships and supporting collaboration.

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • Experience in policy, law reform and advocacy initiatives and coordinating or managing projects
  • Excellent written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • A tertiary degree in law, public policy or a related field
  • Knowledge of gendered violence and gender equality, and experience working on projects with community organisations is highly desirable
