About the Role

The Senior Lawyer sits within the Legal and Policy teams of WLSV and provides high quality legal advice and representation to women experiencing disadvantage.

The Senior Lawyer will conduct family law (property and parenting) and/or child protection matters for women experiencing family violence and disadvantage which will include litigation, appearances in court (other than trials), mediation and family dispute resolution in the areas.

The Senior Lawyer role will also provide mentoring, support and guidance to other lawyers within the team and some managerial support to the Managing Lawyer.

Due to the complexity of the legal issues disadvantaged women experience, the Senior Lawyer will work collaboratively with all WLSV family lawyers, child protection lawyers, policy managers, social workers and financial counsellors as part of a wraparound casework, integrated model of service.

This is a full time or part time (minimum 4 days) position, fixed term for 12 months – with a possibility of extension.

What our Legal and Policy teams do

Our Legal and Policy teams comprise lawyers, policy managers, social workers, financial counsellors and administrators. We provide legal advice and ongoing representation, together with wraparound supports, to women experiencing significant disadvantage in the areas of family law, family violence, child protection and victims of crime assistance. Our direct client work informs our cross-jurisdictional policy and law reform work.

About You

You are a driven, motivated self-starter who has the ability to work autonomously to deliver results that exceed the client's expectations. You have high attention to detail, strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with people quickly.

Key to your success is your:

  • Strong understanding of family law and/or child protection and intersecting jurisdictions
  • Confidence in appearance work
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, and the ability to manage changing priorities
  • Understanding of the gendered nature and impact of family violence

Qualifications and Experience

The following qualifications and experience is required for the position:

  • Eligible for admission to the legal profession as an Australian Legal Practitioner
  • A minimum of four years post admission experience in family law and/or child protection law, in particular in litigation
  • Experience with working with women experiencing family violence
  • Experience in litigation and court advocacy in the Family Court/Federal Circuit Court, Magistrates Court and/or Children’s Court

We work with, and for women experiencing particular disadvantage to address legal issues arising from relationship breakdown or violence. We use our experience to inform our policy, law reform and education work.

WLSV provides legal services within a multi-disciplinary and trauma-informed practice in family law, family violence and child protection.

Our model incorporates social work and financial counselling to provide wrap-around support to the most vulnerable and at-risk clients.
