Program Manager, Indonesian Intact Rainforest Project

World Resources Institute

About the Indonesian intact rainforest project

The Indonesian intact rainforest project is a team in the World Resources Institute that aims to support central and provincial governments of Indonesia to pursue alternative and sustainable economic development in provinces with large amounts of intact forest cover. Indonesia is home to the world’s third largest intact tropical rainforest, after only the Amazon and Congo. The four intact rainforest provinces are hailed as one of the ‘lungs of the world’, as well as having biodiversity of global significance. But with licences for commercial exploitation covering millions of hectares, these forests are threatened.

The Indonesian Intact rainforest project is designed to help amplify and catalyse partners, skills and alliances across governments, business, NGOs and local communities to support the realisation of an alternative development pathway. The initiative is core financed by an Australian foundation and the seven-person team is part of the World Resources Institute’s (WRI) global ‘Food and Landuse Coalition’ (FOLU). This post will be part of the team of four based in Sydney, working closely with two other team members in Indonesia and one in London, and with the wider WRI network globally.

Job Summary

WRI is looking for an energetic, motivated and highly skilled Program Manager to augment the small team in Sydney, Australia.

The role will lead key operational functions of the project as well as delivery of program outcomes. We are looking for someone with highly honed project management skills to coordinate all aspects of the complex work of the project and ensure we progress toward our goals. The position would suit someone trained in project management and business skills, and/or someone with practical experience of community and international development, looking to use their experience to help support some of the world’s most important remaining rainforests.

Job Responsibilities

Operational

  • Manage the projects’ multiple work-streams, ensuring all aspects of a complex and ambitious program are progressing in a timely and effective manner. This will require the ability to coral busy people and hold them to task.
  • Develop documentation that captures workplans and sets out tasks, augmenting delivery; implementing the best tools to do this, including cutting edge IT solutions.
  • Lead the fundraising within the team, for the project. This task will be supported by the development team at WRI. While the project has assured core funding for four years, many of our workstreams require additional funding.
  • Lead the day-to-day relationships associated with the support services for the project within WRI internationally, particularly the budget.

Program Delivery

  • Lead a key workstream. The initiative seeks to coordinate and catalyse interventions to facilitate low carbon futures. Team members take the lead on one or more workstreams suited to their interest and skills. This includes strategic direction setting, managing partners and ensuring delivery.

Job Qualifications

  • Training and experience in project management including management of budgets, contracts and relationships, including business management skills.
  • Proven high level of organisational skills and reliability in delivery of tasks, including proven experience of working unsupervised.
  • Practical experience in community and international development would strengthen your application, as would experience in fundraising.
  • Self-starting: working in a small team seeking to catalyse change, the ability to lead, motivate and work independently is essential.
  • Confident, dedicated, determined, with positive, flexible, ‘can do’ attitude.
  • A passion for addressing climate change, sustainable development and conservation issues and an interest in Indonesia and its forests is preferable.
  • Commitment to WRI’s mission and institutional values.
  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field. A masters degree would be preferable.
  • Possession of Australian nationality/work permit and be able to work in Sydney starting immediately.
