Economic Justice Australia is the peak organisation for community legal centres providing specialist advice to people on their social security issues and rights.

Our 21 members across Australia have provided people with free and independent information, advice, education and representation in the area of social security for over 30 years. Economic Justice Australia provides expert advice to government on social security reform to make it more effective and accessible.

Recent involvement in the Robodebt Royal Commission and advocacy on domestic violence legislative reforms has led to rapid growth in the size, profile and influence of the small team at Economic Justice Australia.

We are recruiting a Deputy CEO with government relations and communications expertise to enable Economic Justice Australia seize this pivotal moment in awareness of the vital role of the social security system to drive positive change for those most vulnerable in our community.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Working closely with the CEO and board which leads a team of 5 staff, the Deputy CEO is responsible for:

  • Driving the Economic Justice Australia government relations and communications strategy to achieve its reform objectives
  • Raising the profile of Economic Justice Australia, representing the organisation in its partnerships, public advocacy and external communications
  • Contributing to the organisational leadership provided by the CEO, including acting up in the CEO role where required, including supervision of staff and volunteers
  • Contributing to organisational development and growth, including assisting the CEO with managing and developing government and philanthropic funder relationships

A passionate and skilled leader, the Deputy CEO will have

  • Excellent strategic planning, implementation and communication skills while also providing hands-on leadership and support
  • A strong understanding of the Australian social security system or demonstrated capacity to rapidly acquire this knowledge
  • High level experience in policy development and analysis, and a demonstrated history of effective advocacy on legal, law reform, social policy and political campaigns, demonstrating expertise in navigating the Australian political system and machinery of government
  • Outstanding verbal communication skills and the ability to engage and build networks with different audiences using various channels including social media
  • Superior written communication skills, including experience supervising the preparation of research publications and submissions to government inquiries
  • Ability to motivate, inspire and support a team of committed and innovative professionals in a flexible but demanding work environment
  • A broad understanding of the legal issues that impact people experiencing vulnerability and the operation of the community legal sector
  • Substantial knowledge of how the social justice sector works in practice and how to manage diverse stakeholders, including member organisations

A strong candidate will also have:

  • Legal qualifications and/or relevant experience and previous work experience in a community legal organisation or related sector
  • An understanding of different funding streams and opportunities
  • Experience managing budgets and reporting to a Board and funding bodies

The salary for this permanent position will be paid at Executive Level 1, with a salary of $120,000 per annum plus super and salary packaging.

As a Public Benevolent Institution, Economic Justice Australia is able to offer staff generous salary packaging options. The tax savings for a staff member choosing to take full advantage of the salary packaging option mean that their take-home salary may be increased by up to $6,000 per annum​.
