Yarra Riverkeeper Association

About Yarra Riverkeeper Association (YRKA)

We are a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation that has grown considerably in recent years. With projects including regeneration, working to combat plastic pollution, and integrating localised knowledge into planning advice across the Yarra River system, our portfolio aims to look at the River as a whole.

We raise government, philanthropy and private sector funds to support our work. We seek to continue growing our advocacy, research and implementation abilities in line with the organisation's core values – so that the Yarra is 'healthy, protected, and loved'.

About the role

YRKA is seeking new members to join its Board and Committees, as its work grows in impact and reputation. It is an exciting time for the Environment with increasing recognition of the critical role that urban waterways play in the ecosystem of a sustainable planet. YRKA is at the centre of advocacy and activities for the Yarra River in the greater Melbourne region.

In 2022, we invite Expressions of Interest from people who are passionate about the River and who would like to help shape our strategic direction over the next few years. In particular, we seek people with knowledge of not-for-profit governance and expertise in fund-raising, organisation scaling, business partnerships, creative entrepreneurship, environmental planning, and education. We particularly welcome enquiries from people with diverse backgrounds.

Requirements

Board meetings occur eight times a year with a duration of 2-3 hours; there is an annual strategy meeting and the Annual General Meeting. Attendance at 80% of these meetings is essential as they carry responsibility for decision-making about strategy, staffing, funding, and other legal liabilities for the YRKA. Average time needed per month will go from 8-10 hours.
