  • Remuneration: $85-90,000 (depending on experience) per annum pro rata (plus 10% superannuation)
  • Tenure: 1.0 FTE on a 12-month contract

The Yarra Energy Foundation (YEF) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with a huge ambition — to achieve a zero-carbon future in the City of Yarra. We exist to work with residents and businesses to design and deliver programs that make a real difference.

  • Demonstrate pathways to a zero-carbon and equitable society for all.
  • Influence and inspire residents, businesses and community groups to acquire understanding, invest within their means and take action where possible.
  • Deliver practical programs with solutions that have a positive impact in reducing energy costs, fossil fuel consumption and associated emissions while improving comfort levels, energy productivity and renewable energy uptake.

As we accelerate our actions with ever more ambitious goals, we need a passionate Commercial Project Manager that can help us achieve a step change in our impact in reducing carbon emissions, in the City of Yarra and beyond.

Focusing on the growing market for solar and storage solutions, including community batteries, you will set out to scope, design and deliver major projects that:

  • decarbonise the consumption of stationary energy
  • improve the energy efficiency of the built environment
  • help articulate the funding/business case
  • manage clients and project partner organisations
  • mobilise the community and manage stakeholder relationships

About you and the role

You are a passionate thought-leader and manager who can understand complexity and communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences. You are proficient in both technical and commercial matters.

To succeed in the role, you will need to be able to:

  • Understand the energy sector, technologies and markets.
  • Develop business opportunities by promoting YEF’s services to the market and effectively responding to enquiries.
  • Provide project management services for the delivery of projects won.
  • Engage key partners, including local governments, suppliers, energy market stakeholders (agencies, networks etc), businesses (SME to C&I), Local and State government departments and the broader community (associations, residents etc.).
  • Work within a resource limited not-for-profit structure while maintaining a strong commercial focus.
  • Adopt and thrive in a ‘hands-on’ work environment that requires a pro-active and self- sufficient work approach, balancing team tasks with roles expectations.

Key requirements

The successful candidate will ideally possess and be able to demonstrate:

  • A degree or higher (preferred majors include engineering, environmental science, business, finance/investment) or demonstrated industry experience.
  • Commercial experience in areas such as business development, contract negotiation, business case development and customer support.
  • Technical ability in electrical and/or energy related disciplines, either in the form of a formal qualification or industry experience.
  • Understanding of the evolving energy sector and National Energy Market (NEM), climate related issues and pathways for sustainable business outcomes, political and regulatory schemes, frameworks and delivery models, distributed generation technology and opportunities for decarbonisation.
  • Ability to gather and manipulate market intelligence and sources of data to identify target markets, sectors, key demographics, along with experience in planning targeted projects/campaigns.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • An autonomous and confident approach to seeking out new opportunities, and the ability to drive them to completion.
  • Existing networks in the energy sector, business groups and associations and potentially Local/State Government is a plus.

Key Selection Criteria

  • A clear passion for renewable energy and sustainability demonstrated by thought leadership and prior or current engagements.
  • 3+ years’ experience in technical areas such as electrical technology, and/or commercial areas such as business development in B2B or B2C markets.
  • Prior experience in project management in technical or commercial areas.
  • Working knowledge of energy markets, renewable energy technology, disruptive technology and the energy policy landscape.
  • Demonstrated autonomy and responsibility for the development and co-ordination of activities without direct supervision.
  • Outstanding engagement and negotiation skills, persuasive ability and excellent communication, networking and customer service skills.

Highly Desirable

  • Strong networks and clear and positive communication skills.
  • Experience in prospecting, lead development, identifying new funding streams, account management, forecasting, preparation of presentations and proposals, reviewing contracts, offers and securing new client agreements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
