Child & Family Counsellor - Engagement with Education Program

yourtown

About the opportunity

The Engagement with Education Engagement program is a wholly yourtown funded pilot program designed to facilitate a successful transition to high school for primary school students demonstrating low levels of engagement with education and identified as at risk of not transitioning successfully to high school.

Students are identified prior to their final year of primary school and are supported for a minimum of two years. The model features three integrated components: intensive individual student support; support for families; and support for schools. Program staff provide individual, child centred and family focussed support to students at school and in the home, and work in close collaboration with the school and the child’s family to tailor support to each child.

As the Child and Family Counsellor you will provide individual and group counselling to students (10-12 years old) and their families. You will utilise a range of therapeutic modalities and counselling interventions and work collaboratively with program staff and other agencies to achieve positive outcomes for children and their families.

About you:

You will be skilled in building and maintaining relationships with a range of stakeholders and will be excited by the opportunity to work in and help shape a new program responding to the specific needs and service gaps in the Ipswich area.

You will have:

  • Demonstrated experience working therapeutically with children and young people (aged 10-12yrs) and their families
  • Strong understanding of trauma informed care, neurobiology of trauma and child centred therapeutic practice
  • Bachelor qualifications in Psychology, Social Work or Counselling
  • Ability to deliver culturally appropriate therapeutic interventions
  • Knowledge of the school system and appropriate supports available would be beneficial

This is a maximum term, part time position, 19 hours per week until 31 December 2022.
