The Solicitor’s responsibility is to provide legal services in the area of disability discrimination and generalist areas of law to people with disability and their associates and undertaking projects in community legal education, legal reform and legal policy analysis. Under the direction of the Principal Solicitor, this role comprises the following legal services:
- Legal information and referral
- Drafting legal advice
- Providing minor casework assistance
- Conducting casework
- Legal policy analysis and law reform
- Community legal education
Solicitors work collaboratively with other staff at ACDL and volunteers as well as other community and government organisations.
Essential Selection Criteria
Applicants are required to respond to the following essential selection criteria:
- At least three years’ post admission experience.
- Hold or eligible to hold a practising certificate in NSW.
- Demonstrated understanding of disability discrimination legislation and other disability legislation, policies and practices through previous employment in similar or relevant position(s), and at least one other area of law affecting people with disability.
- Demonstrated ability to draft concise legal advice and conduct casework.
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to social justice, as well as the capacity to identify legal issues facing people with disability.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision, manage priorities, timelines and multiple tasks, undertake own administration, maintain data collection and prepare reports, take initiative and accept responsibility.
- Ability to manage and supervise volunteers.
- Capacity to undertake legal research, projects in legal reform, legal policy analysis, develop and deliver community legal education programs and other special projects that may arise.
- Work proactively, professionally and collaboratively with team members and stakeholders in a positive environment of communication and collegiality to provide legal and non-legal support to people with disability and their associates.
- This role may involve intrastate travel to develop and deliver outreach services to rural, regional and remote locations.
- Excellent communication and computer literacy skills.
Desirable
- Candidates with experience in other areas of law relevant to people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
- Civil litigation experience, including representation at conciliation conferences in either the Australian Human Rights Commission or Anti-Discrimination Board.
- Capacity to develop and deliver outreach services in rural, regional and remote areas and willingness to work after hours to accommodate outreach requirements.
- A current drivers licence is highly desirable.
