About the role

The Victorian Greens are looking for a community organiser to lead a volunteer team for the electorate of Macnamara in the inner south of Melbourne. You will use your relationship building skills to develop a team of volunteer leaders to support our candidate and campaign team. The work will vary from holding campaign events, to supporting community fundraising, recruiting new volunteers and supporting thousands of persuasive conversations with people across the electorate. If you’re excited by grassroots democracy and people-powered movements, you’ll love this role.

About the Victorian Greens

Over the course of the last four decades the Greens have become the third force in Australian politics, with members elected to represent their communities at every level of government. We are a grassroots party that relies on the support of thousands of members and volunteers from across the state.

We’re currently preparing for a Federal election which could be held in late 2021 or early 2022. The electorate of Macnamara is located in Melbourne's south around the eastern shores of Port Phillip Bay and takes in the suburbs of Port Melbourne, Albert Park, Balaclava, Caulfield, Elwood, Middle Park, Ripponlea, South Melbourne and St Kilda, as well as parts of Glen Huntly and Elsternwick.

The aim of this role is to build a volunteer team and gradually step away from day to day operations and into an electorate-wide leadership role.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Develop and manage a volunteer leadership team: Build a team of local volunteer leaders, including holding 1:1 relational recruitment conversations, team meetings and regular 1:1 support.

  • Community fundraising: Initially running volunteer fundraising supporter phonebanks to secure donations & reporting in line with fundraising plan, then stepping up and supporting a volunteer leader in this role.

  • Event management: Assist with the organisation of large events like campaign launches, community forums and fundraising dinners.

  • Volunteer recruitment: Initially hosting regular volunteer recruitment phone banks, and volunteer intro nights then stepping up and supporting a volunteer leader in these roles.

  • Voter contact: Initially running doorknocking events, and their associated trainings, debrief events, confirmation calls, follow up thank you calls, and data entry nights, printing and preparing door knocking data packs and then stepping up and supporting volunteer leaders in these roles.

  • Data management and reporting: Ensure campaign supporter and voter data is kept up to date and secure, provide weekly progress reports regarding key KPIs, and write an evaluation report in the weeks following the campaign.

The priority between these responsibilities will vary across the month and across the different phases of the campaign, with an emphasis on fundraising and events early in the campaign and increased voter contact later in the campaign. A volunteer campaign committee will support the organiser in prioritising and delivering on these responsibilities.

Selection criteria:

  • Commitment to the Greens’ charter and policies.

  • Strong understanding of the Australian political landscape.

  • Strong rapport-building and relationship skills. You can quickly build and maintain relationships of trust in a local group and broader Greens community.

  • Experience in volunteer leadership, including the ability to build and supervise teams, mentor volunteers to develop skills and find meaningful roles for people from a range of backgrounds.

  • Persuasive communication skills, both verbal and written, to motivate people to take action.

  • Outstanding organisational skills, experience in managing people and logistics to tight deadlines and deliver outcomes.

  • Experience in electoral campaigning tactics: volunteer recruitment, fundraising, event management, door knocking, and/or voter calls.

Bonus points for:

  • Understanding of, and relationships in, the Macnamara electorate.

  • Demonstrated experience of working with multicultural and/or diverse communities.

  • Experience using digital organising tools such as Nationbuilder, Slack and Zoom (or similar).

  • Demonstrated experience in developing training resources, guides and materials as well as delivering volunteer training events.
