About the role

We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional to join the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia Limited (ALSWA) as an Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer.

This position will be an employee of the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia Limited but will be based for the majority of time (on secondment) at Circle Green Community Legal for the Workplace Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Legal Services Project (the Project).

Circle Green Community Legal is a community legal centre providing workplace, humanitarian, tenancy and family and domestic violence legal advice, further assistance, representation, advocacy, community legal education, referrals, outreach, and support.

The Project has been established to reduce the prevalence and impact of workplace sexual harassment and discrimination in Western Australia by delivering legal services and community education. The outcomes of the Project include:

  • Prevalence and nature of workplace sexual harassment and discrimination in Western Australia is identified, understood, and monitored.
  • Legal advice and support services are integrated, responsive, and delivered for people experiencing workplace sexual harassment and discrimination.
  • Increased community, workplace, legal profession, and individual knowledge of, and skills to respond to workplace sexual harassment and discrimination enabling safe and meaningful workplaces.
  • Sex discrimination and workplace legislation that protects workers and fosters safe workplaces.

The Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer will be responsible for engaging and building relationships within the community, ensuring increased Aboriginal engagement with the Project, and building organisational capacity to ensure access, equity, and inclusion of Aboriginal people in a culturally appropriate way.

This position will require some outreach work to local community groups across Western Australia which may include overnight stays.

This position is identified under section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA) as a role requiring a person who identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.

About you

To be considered for this role, you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice issues
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding and/or relevant lived experience of Aboriginal communities and cultures and the issues affecting them, with an appropriate level of cultural understanding, empathy and sensitivity.
  • Engagement and casework experience with Aboriginal clients
  • Demonstrated gendered and structural analysis of the prevalence and causes of sexual violence against women.
  • Ability to engage with Aboriginal people in remote and rural communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team comprising legal and non-legal staff with a willingness to learn and share knowledge with others
  • Highly developed communication skills (interpersonal, written and verbal) including experience in conflict resolution and the ability to develop collaborative partnerships.
  • Ability to confidently use workplace technology, well-developed IT skills, with experience using Microsoft products and databases.
  • Demonstrated high level organisational and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to travel when required.

Desirable

  • Qualifications in Social Work or similar fields and/or three years’ experience working in community support services is desirable.
