About the role

The Aboriginal Families Thrive – Support Officer is a First Nations identified role responsible for working closely with the Aboriginal Families Thrive Coordinator and Aboriginal people involved in the Tiraapendi Wodli (TW) program.  

TW is an Aboriginal community-led initiative which works alongside the community in the Port Adelaide and western area to strengthen the health, safety and lives of Aboriginal families. The position works closely with Aboriginal men, women and their families; and Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, Courts, community corrections and justice services to deliver coordinated and culturally connected support to Aboriginal families including men and women returning to community from prison.

The TW Hub provides a culturally safe space for community members to connect, learn from each other, access information and skills and improve the cultural strengths and quality of their lives. The position supports people in both one-to-one and group settings and will support community members to attend external agency meetings as requested.

The position contributes to the delivery and development of the Tiraapendi Wodli 20 Steps: Post-release support program and other activities designed to cater to the various needs and interests of the community.

What you will bring

  • Well-developed understanding and skills in using strengths-based approaches to working with Aboriginal men, families and communities
  • Demonstrated understanding of cultural diversity and ability to articulate and advocate that awareness and understanding to other stakeholders
  • Sound understanding of issues that impact on the health, wellbeing and safety of Aboriginal people and their families including people in contact with prison and justice services 
  • Demonstrated ability to support people to identify and work towards personal goals to improve the quality of their lives
  • Ability to effectively deliver key messages and programs in community settings 
  • Sound interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate key messages in diverse community and stakeholder environments (including network meetings, community forums)

Working with Children Check and Driver Licence are required for this role.

This role is covered by the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award - Level 3. Salary from $71,155.76 FTE + superannuation + access to salary packaging.
