BADAC is the Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisation (ACCO) for the Ballarat and District area, covering 4 local government areas (LGAs). The Opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a Maternal & Child Health (MCH) Nurse who is passionate to make a difference on a Permanent Part Time basis (22.5 hours).

Reporting to the Practice Manager, the role of the (MCH) Nurse is to provide care and support for Aboriginal Families from the perinatal period through to school age. The MCH Nurse provides services at Ballarat & District Aboriginal Co-operative (BADAC) Medical Clinic and outreach as necessary to promote optimal health and wellbeing for the children.

The position is part of the holistic & team focused approach of the Ballarat & District Aboriginal Co-operative (BADAC) & involves working across several program areas & liaising with external providers.

Key Responsibilities

Perinatal & Early Childhood Care

• Provision of a quality Maternal & Child Health service.
• Assess, monitor & promote the health, growth, development & behaviour of children 0-5 years of age.
• As an Accredited Immuniser, provide childhood immunisation as per National Childhood Immunisation Schedule.
• Connecting women/ families to other services according to their needs.
• Engaging mothers in parenting programs through a range of Koori Family Services programs, including the Bubs & Playgroup.

General Duties

• Health assessment for infants and children from 0-5 years.
• Referrals to Paediatrician, or Allied Health services.
• Immunisation.
• Identification of Emotional Wellbeing issues/ Postnatal Depression support.
• Attendance at relevant regional planning forums.
• Act as an advocate for children & parents of the Aboriginal community, within the capacity of MCH Nurse.
• Assist with identifying health needs & to implement actions that will enhance the health of the community.
• Other general clinic duties as directed by the Practice Manager.

Key Selection Criteria

To be considered and successful in this application, you will possess the following:

• Ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people with demonstrated knowledge & understanding OR willingness to learn about the Aboriginal culture and social determinants of health and wellbeing.
• Current registration as a Division I Registered Nurse.
• Post Graduate qualifications in Maternal & Child Health Nursing Immunisation and enhanced Parenting experience.
• Experience in:
  
  • Centre-based Maternal & Child Health practice
  • Aboriginal Health
  • Child Immunisation
• Professional Indemnity Cover.
• Excellent interpersonal & communication skills to clearly communicate with a diverse range of families, including parents & children, other professional, & team members.
• Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team that is flexible and creative. Be willing to work alongside clients and family, be non-judgmental and display a culturally sensitive and safe attitude.
• Ability to contribute to the planning & development of the service.
• Excellent computer skills & the ability to maintain data & statistics accurately.
• Maintain awareness of current & new legislation to ensure compliance with all statutory & regulatory obligations.
• Has a sound knowledge of OH&S policies and standards of practice.
