Barkly Regional Arts seeks a full time Visual Arts Studio Technician to join its vibrant and collaborative team. The Visual Arts Studio Technician works closely with the visual arts team and artists, assisting in the smooth operations of our visual art studio in Tennant Creek. 

ABOUT BARKLY REGIONAL ARTS

Barkly Regional Arts is the hub for arts in the Barkly, a region that covers an area of around 322, 717 square kilometres of Australia’s Northern Territory. We collaborate with remote Indigenous communities to foster access, development and recognition of arts in the Barkly.

ABOUT YOU

The successful applicant will be a self-starter, relationship-focused and has an interest in the arts. You are adaptable and flexible, highly personable and capable of building and maintaining relationships with our stakeholders including artists, customers, and other community members. You understand or are eager to learn the technical skills behind art making, including but not limited to building frames, stretching canvas, mixing painting and kiln operation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Studio

  • Assist in managing the needs of the artists in the Tartukula studio including morning pick-ups and afternoon drop offs, lunch preparation and shopping.
  • Oversee the operation of the visual arts workshop, including preparing frames, stretching and gessoing fresh canvas for artists.
  • Assist with mixing paint.
  • Assist in conducting a stock take of artworks and materials, including ensuring works and materials are stored properly and keeping track of material levels.
  • Assist in keeping the studio and storeroom clean and tidy.
  • Assist with managing online sales, including preparing works for shipping.

Outreach

  • Assist the Visual Arts Outreach Coordinator in preparing supplies for remote communities, stretching canvases, mixing paint, distributing paint into small containers.
  • Travel to remote communities when required to deliver supplies, collect and catalogue completed art works where required.

Ad hoc

  • Assisting with art handling and hanging works.
  • Assist with making frames and stretching canvases for clients.
  • Assist with the sale of work, including point of sale using SAM.
  • Assist in preparing for major events and projects including Barkly Artist Camp, Desert Harmony Festival, Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair and Desert Mob.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Driving licence
  • Ochre Card (working with children check) or ability to obtain one

Desirable

  • Experience working with Indigenous people in a remote context
  • Technical understanding of art and art making
  • Experience working with creatives in a creative environment
