Melville and Bathurst Islands are collectively known as the Tiwi Islands, the home of the Tiwi people. The Tiwi People have occupied the islands since at least the last ice age when the islands were separated from the mainland approximately 11,000 years ago. After years of isolation, the Tiwi have a unique language and culture, including dance, song and art.

The islands are 8,320km2 of eucalypt, paperbark and monsoon vine forest, coastal wetlands, secluded waterfalls and deserted beaches. An extensive and magnificent array of barely touched mangrove-lined river and creek systems, sand flats and coastal reefs, all abundant with marine life, means the Islands are an unspoiled paradise.

The Tiwi Islands Regional Council (TIRC) is a remote local government representative body that covers Bathurst and Melville Islands. TIRC delivers local government services and community programs to a population of 2,348 (ABS, 2021). As of May 2019, there are 1,592 registered voters across both islands.

Council employs over 119 staff and has a current budget of over $16 million. Council is looking for a Chief Executive Officer who can demonstrate the ability to be successful in the unique environment of a remote local government and is keen to be a proactive member of the local community - someone who can work with the Council team and the local communities to deliver on the exciting challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

An attractive Remuneration Package comprised of a base salary of $210k to $240k plus superannuation and full private use motor vehicle, housing, travel allowance and communications are available for the right candidate.
