About Brainwave Bikes

With the support of Mercedes-Benz Australia, Brainwave has established Brainwave Bikes, a social enterprise that receives, refurbishes, and retails donated used bikes, especially children’s bikes.  We operate out of a 750sqm showroom in Dingley Village, near Moorabbin DFO, with a target to sell at least 5,000 bikes per year.

Role Purpose

The primary purpose of the workshop leader is to oversee all mechanical operations of Brainwave Bikes. To take ownership of the workshop and tools and assist the team in the day-to-day running of bicycle repairs and workflow. You will procure and manage the inventory of new and secondhand parts and will help to categorise bicycles and bike parts to store them in the most efficient way. You will ensure that every bike sold is a quality serviced product with customer satisfaction of high importance and value, as well as train, schedule and mentor a team of paid and volunteer mechanics and other bike work.

Key responsibilities 

  • Workshop Organisation
    • Maintain workshop tools and equipment
    • Modify systems to maximise the efficiency of repairs
    • Implement waste management for scrap metal, rubber, and general waste
    • Ensure workshop and staff comply to all relevant safety standards
  • Stock control
    • Maintain adequate stock levels
    • Manage the procurement of bike parts and accessories with suppliers
    • Inventory control of storeroom with a tailored layout suitable for second hand bicycle parts
    • Carry out stock takes and reconcile to stock records
  • Leadership
    • Lead, schedule, train and motivate a team of skilled volunteers, trainees, and employees while maintaining targets
    • Coordinate daily responsibilities and tasks to your team
    • Oversee and solve technical problems
  • Retail
    • Engage with customers and cultivate relationships with suppliers and donors
    • Assist with sales and POS when necessary
  • Reporting
    • Produce analysis and reports as required
