In November 2020, the Victorian Government announced a historic $5.3 billion towards the construction of 12,000 new homes over the next four years as part of the Big Housing Build.
A key initiative of the Big Housing Build is to support the growth of homes for Aboriginal Victorians by 10%.
Under self-determination principles, many of these homes could be owned and managed by Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), or ACCOs could explore other models that best suited their organisation and their community, including partnering with mainstream registered housing agencies.
Critical to the success of the Homes for Aboriginal Victorians initiative is the recruitment of a Partnership Development Officer.
The Partnership Development Officer will work collaboratively with ACCOs and registered housing agencies to encourage partnership formation and support those ACCOs interested in becoming registered community housing providers.
The role will be jointly managed by Aboriginal Housing Victoria (AHV) and Community Housing Industry Association Victoria (CHIA Vic) and comes with salary packaging and generous tax concessions.
The Partnership Development Officer will be employed by AHV but based at CHIA Vic.
Aboriginal Housing Victoria (AHV) is an Aboriginal community organisation responsible for managing more than 1,500 rental properties for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Victoria.
AHV’s vision is to ensure that Aboriginal Victorians secure appropriate, affordable housing as a pathway to better lives and stronger communities.
In addition to being the largest Aboriginal Registered Housing Agency in Australia, AHV is the lead agency for Victoria’s Aboriginal housing and homelessness policy, Mana-na worn-tyeen maar-takoort.
The Community Housing Industry Association Victoria (CHIA Vic) is the peak body representing not-for-profit community housing organisations in this state.
CHIA Vic’s role is to advocate on behalf of members to government and other relevant bodies and provide advice, resources, and training to the community housing sector. Community housing in Victoria is provided by a large and diverse range of not-for-profit organisations. These organisations own and manage over 20,000 tenancies in Victoria across the regulated and independent sectors.
