About Carers WA

Carers WA is the peak body representing the needs and interests of carers in Western Australia and is part of a national network of Carers Associations providing a range of support services, supporting Carers across Western Australia. Carers provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have disability, mental illness, a chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged.

About the Role

Carers WA currently has a rare and exciting opportunity for an experienced Systemic Policy Officer to join our team of passionate and hard-working professionals.

The Systemic Policy Officer is responsible for collating carer issues which are identified during the delivery of Carers WA services and by networking with other community organisations and groups. This role will develop policy positions to better support carers and advocate for policy change. The role will prepare submissions, briefing papers and business cases.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Network with government, non-government and not for profit community organisations to develop awareness in relation to carers
• Attend/organise relevant networking and forum/consultation opportunities
• Identify gaps in policy/services in relation to carers and provide recommendations as required
• Research carer related data to provide an evidence base for submissions and other work in relation to carers (e.g. policy statements or business cases)
• Consult with key stakeholders to inform Carers WA’s policy position
• Maintain a work plan for all policy and research projects
• Support the Carer Representation Program Systemic Advocacy functions
• Represent Carers WA on various committees and policy groups
• Assist with and undertake other duties as determined by the CEO or Head of Corporate Services, including assisting with special projects

Selection Criteria

Essential

• Qualification relevant to the role or at least two years’ experience in working in a similar role within the not for profit community sector
• Experience in developing and delivering presentations and facilitating consultations
• Ability to research information and prepare statistical and narrative reports
• Well-developed interpersonal verbal and written communication skills
• High level of organisation and planning skills
• Well-developed computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Suite

Experience in engaging with and maintaining relationships with senior level community sector staff as well as diverse groups (e.g. service providers and carers)

Able to occasionally work outside of standard work hours and travel regionally

Provide police clearance issued within previous 3 months

Current ‘C’ class Driver’s Licence.

Desirable

• Well-developed understanding of issues impacting on carers
• Understanding of legislation and standards in relation to carers.
